Can we do our own diagnosis...or is that unsafe?

Should we perhaps err to the judgement of those who know more when it comes to labeling so called sociopaths?

It is a complex condition, and probably best to leave it to a professional.. there may be different degrees of it as well.. I don't really know.. like narcissism.. you can be diagnosed narcissistic and be on the lesser end of the disorder.. I don't know if the same applies for 'anti social personality disorder' but the two (narcissism and ASPD) share common characteristics... It has been many years since I have studied psychology

How's this for a theory?

Before the Internet, folks had to look up information at the library.

Either on microfiche or on a database

Nowadays, information is instantaneous for those who have an Internet access.

Wisdom comes from experience and what is learned and remembered.

Not from what is instantly read, cut & pasted laugh

And that means that wisdom is not age related grin

ermm i mmust say there is something thats not quite right ..

Psychopaths and wisdom i feel has no connection per se.
They lack Insight usually or else suffer a Psychiatric condition or a Personality disorder.

One might find some patients extremely well read .. goes for a lot of schizophrenics who come across extremely brilliant but can be quite dangerous .

Thread kinda went off in a tangent after I responded to Chris's comment on Serial Killers... was just making the point that insight, emotion and empathy are necessary tools to acquiring wisdom.. A serial killer (often Psychopaths) would lack some of the necessary tools IMO to acquire such wisdom as a consequence of their actions.. that was all was trying to say really... sigh

thumbs up thumbs up

As for the sociopath and psychopath bit , I have posted this before ...

"A sociopath is an old term for the presently known “Antisocial Personality Disorder.” In other words it is not an illness or any defense mechanism but a personality disorder.

There are a number of traits that exist in different people BUT to clearly call them or diagnose them as sociopaths equivalent to antisocial personality disorder people there are diagnostic techniques adopted. In Psychiatry, one distinct feature is one can actually find oneself possessing a lot of traits mentioned under any particular condition but not be diagnosed or possess the same. So it’s not right to categorise someone this way... rather not easy either.

Further, what is significant is a "normal" person has, due to empathy, a negative reaction to things such as pain, suffering, violence, cruelty, deception, etc. The psychopath has a positive reaction to these things. They enjoy them. The sociopath has no reaction at all. They are devoid of empathy but otherwise neutral on the issue. "

So as Aries has mentioned , its best left to a professional to diagnose cos in both cases the implications are serious.

Age is about growing like the cow's tail.

Wisdom is as much about what we choose to throw out, as it is about what we choose to retain, at any age.
