hey, this is kind of a follow up on slims rage thread.. and it got me thinkin.. why do we need prisons?? its a luxury theses days, wht cant it just be a simple system like whatever crime you commit, you get it done back you?? you rob a bank for 1,000 you pay it back, or work community service for free until you do?? you beat up somebody outside a pub for no reason, you get a beating yourself from some big 7ft jean claude van damme guy?? you kill somebody and proved guilty.. then tough shit, who are you to take someones life, your dead??

why cant this be the way, i think its proper order..

If We did that and got rid of prisons ans jail sentence well then it would be all out WAR...not safe for anyone

You really have to think about what you are saying here. It is wrong to inflict pain on someone, even if they have on someone else. If someone robs a Bank - Pay it back? Millionaires don't rob Banks.

The idea of doing some sort of repayment is a good idea rather than sitting in a prison. A lot of countries have systems that do this and they seem to have results.

It is a complex subject. Punishing people with Prison for crimes does not work in the vast majority of cases.

We in this country have a very antiquated Prison system badly in need of a major overhaul, for example there is only two rehabilitation Officers, both part time or the whole country.

The cross section of the Prison population has to be looked at, for example what is the point of putting someone in prison if they have only an IQ of 70 and never had any special education? none whatsoever.

What is the point of putting people in Prison for not having a televison Licence, last time I checked the figures there was three people in Prison for this.

What is the point of putting Junkies in prison for possession, they are sick quite simply and have committed a crime petty or otherwise to feed this craving.

This is a quote from Wikipedia about one of the prisons in Ireland - Mountjoy which was originally built in 1847 as a temporary holding place before transportation to Australia.

The cells that were designed in 1847 for the temporary holding of one prisoner now holds two prisoners!

The prison was built with in-cell sanitation but this was removed in 1939 at the instigation of a civil servant who deemed that 'prisoners were using too much water'.

Inmates have to use chamber pots, empty milk cartons and other receptacles in lieu of proper sanitation.

The Inspector-General of Prisons and Places of Detention has stated that prisoners in Mountjoy are existing in most inhumane, degrading and overcrowded conditions, and that many have to sleep on the floor in filthy conditions due to overcrowding. He recommended that it be closed and demolished.

The Inspector-General has described the attitude of the Minister for Justice towards reform as "frightening and fascist"

All I have to say is this,
you come live in a ghetto, where so many have found a way to get around doing jail time.
You try to live around people who have no respect & turn to living like wild dogs, people who would just as soon turn on you for amusement. They do not act like humans, they behave like greedy half animals with human resources. You come live in a nest of them & then imagine the whole world falling into a tribal fight to live concept.
Would you be so arrogant as to think that you would survive total chaos?
In some form or fashion, those who would live by abusing others need to be removed or separated....

I am sorry to hear you are in such a situation but I am not being arrogant. I am merely pointing out the facts.

I am saying that the system as it is does not work. Prison has been found to not work. The result of the existing prison system is exactly what you describe.

There are far better ways of dealing with criminals that helps the situation you describe occurring. The prison system here and America is very similar. I don't have stats for here but America has the highest prison population in the world. It is estimated by some sources that that will double over the coming years.

Unfortunately you like the rest of us have to live with the consequences of successive inadequate government.

I agree and there is no way I am saying that people should not be punished for a crime, but the punishment that exists in some countries like here and a lot of the US is not working.

The antiquated sentences that Judges can hand out here in Ireland are the problem in my view. Many Judges hands are tied in most cases.

We had a case here in Limerick that was in front of a Judge last year that was horrific. He sentenced the person that acted as a "look out" and that was a first here.

The entire system needs an complete overhaul from the top down.

You're here because you had a bad one, you will stay and you will see there are better ways to lead your life, if it kills, our mentors have have turned their lives around.) Here you will be given the option to turn your life around. If you are addicted to the high...take up windsurfing...it's much less hanging around than surfing. No offense Dudes

2) If you have killed, you will face the family in close quarters that you have affected. No violence, no-one will physically attack you in the manner you took life. Nothing will bring anyone back. Call me a libertarian, I don't mind, I have my values do you. Prove it, I have a publicly elected council to decide if you have proven it.

3) Pedophilia...Enjoy your sentence. You will be accommodated on the Island. (It has to be contained) What...your complaint is that you do not have internet access on this Island...you will not be afforded contact with the outside world. You have proven that you cannot behave. And don't even begin to say it is your basic human right.

The best medical assistance will be provided, regular check ups, dental and physically.

All food flown in will be Organic and healthy in nature.

Shelter will be provided to a high standard, sanitation, warmth, well being and overall well being.

If anyone wishes to be trained in anything, all assistance will be given.
