Spring Cleaning For The Body

Posted: Apr 10, 2008, 2:41 AM CST
Spring is an ideal time to do a spring cleaning of our own body – internally and experience rejuvenation.

Feeling sluggish or out of sync? Having skin problems, aches and pains, or digestive problems? Straying from your healthier habits lately? It might be time for a detox.

Practiced for centuries by many cultures around the world — including ayurvedic and Chinese medicine systems — detoxification is about resting, cleaning and nourishing the body from the inside out. By removing and eliminating toxins, then feeding your body with healthy nutrients, detoxifying can help protect you from disease and renew your ability to maintain optimum health.

"The body has its own natural healing system," says Peter Bennett, N.D., medical director of Helios Clinic in Victoria, B.C., and co-author with Stephen Barrie, N.D. and Sara Faye, of 7-Day Detox Miracle (Prima Health). "Detoxification enhances this system," he explains.

How Does Detoxification Work?
Basically, detoxification means cleaning the blood. It does this mainly by removing impurities from the blood in the liver, where toxins are processed for elimination. The body also eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymph and skin. However, when this system is compromised, impurities aren't properly filtered and every cell in the body is adversely affected.

A detox program can help the body's natural cleaning process by:
1) Resting the organs through fasting;
2) Stimulating the liver to drive toxins from the body;
3) Promoting elimination through the intestines, kidneys and skin;
4) Improving circulation of the blood; and
5) Refueling the body with healthy nutrients.

"Detoxification works because it addresses the needs of individual cells, the smallest units of human life," says Bennett.

We have people here from all over the world. There are many different methods of Detoxification.
Please share what you have found to work best for you.
Also share any testimonies you may have as to the benefits of Detox.
Thanks! HL

Yes, we must take time out to enjoy the beauty of nature! Take deep breaths and absorb it all, actually becoming one with it. I guess this is why Spring is my favorite time of year... the flowers display their glory for all to admire, new leaves appear on trees, animals come out from hibernating, it is good therapy for the mind and soul to surround ones self in this atmosphere.

I use the relaxation method you have discribed here also. Very effective.

Colon detox is not something that is uncommon these days. It is basically a process of flushing away the congested toxins which are built up around the walls of the colon. Besides that, this process also removes all the excessive mucus in the colon. These excessive toxins and mucus usually build up due to bad diet, stress, drugs and medications, chemical and food preservatives and parasites.

The colon detox process can be done in 2 ways; through a nutritional diet or a colon cleanse. The former is related to home care of food and dietary needs, while the latter involves a more clinical process.

Prior to having a new detox recipe, you should spend, at the minimum, seven days eating a light nutritional fare for cleansing your colon and readying your body for the more dynamic detox recipes. This includes avoiding junk foods, and maintaining the healthy diet for a full week. Look for detox recipes which include only wholesome ingredients like fresh fruits and vegetables, extra-virgin olive oil, unsalted nuts and seeds, and herbal teas.

Simple Lemon Detox:
One of the easiest detox recipes to make is a lemon drink for replacement of all solid foods for a period of up to a week or even two. You could also simply substitute a meal or two each day with the lemon beverage if you prefer. This drink is created by adding two tablespoons of brown rice syrup along with two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice to a glass full of water. You may add a dash of fresh grated ginger for taste and to help your digestive system function. Use in place of solid food whenever hunger strikes.

Fresh Fruit Detox:
Fresh fruit like bananas, apples and strawberries can be used to whip up satisfying detox salads. You can use strawberries, lemon zest, extra soft tofu, and honey to make a delightful dessert.
The apple detox diet advises three days of eating only apples and applesauce, and drinking apple juice and cider. Fruit is a great way of cleansing the body and bringing wellness and vitality to your life.

There has been a lot in the news lately about the amazing properties of turmeric, a free-radical-fighting antioxidant-rich curry spice that has been hailed as a defense against both cancer and Alzheimer’s.
Here's a tasty recipe for a warming, detoxifying ginger-turmeric tea...

2 cups water
1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger
1/2 teaspoon powdered turmeric
1 tablespoon maple syrup
Juice of 1/2 lemon

1. Bring water to a boil, then add powdered herbs. Simmer for 10 minutes.
2. Strain tea into a mug, add maple syrup and lemon, stirring to combine. Drink warm.
Makes 1 serving.

For a simple summer detox, make a pitcher of green tea. Steep with the pulverized or blended contents of one 8oz can(or 2 fresh peaches) organic sliced peaches for around 6 mins. Chill thoroughly. Serve with maple syrup, honey or Succanat & enjoy.

Excellent methods and advice Spicey!

It is Very Important to point out, as you did here, the body should be prepared before doing the cleanse. Cleanses can be very harsh treatment to a plugged up toxic body.

Remember to drink lots of water daily.

To keep a healthy colon, try eating oatmeal and other whole grain cereals for breakfast and also as a final meal in the evening. Enjoy some fresh fruit with it.

Another variation to the Lemon Detox, I use pure Maple Syrup instead of brown rice syrup to make the lemonade.

Fresh Fruit Smoothies are a great way to intake lots of fruits all at once in a delightful blended drink. Just use any kind of fruit you have on hand. Strawberries, Blueberries, Blackberries, Banana, Peaches, Dark Red Cheries, a tad of any kind of fruit juice, sprinkle a little flax seed and wheatgerm and a container of yougurt and blend. UUUUUUMMMMMMMMM! Health never tasted so good!

Also, freshly juiced apples or pears make a healthy drink.
Here's a good energy pick me up ~ 2 apples, 1 stalk celery, juice them and drink quickly. Tastes great!

I haven't tried the turmeric... but I sure will! Sounds good! So does the green tea and peaches!

Thanks to Spicygamble for these great Healthy ideas and recipes!wave

I "rest" my system twice a year. Eat lightly, fruit and veg for a week and then a try a fast. I have used the Stanley Burroughs Master Cleanse (AKA as the lemonade diet) and had incredible energy and felt the least hunger and negative side effects that I ever have with a fast. In fact it was the first time I got beyond three days I think.

However, I always get a health review before doing something dramatically different to my body. The master cleanse includes a salt water wash to empty the bowel, other regimens require enemas and elements that are stressful if you do not usually do them.

Plus, if you are on prescribed medication different foods, less food may have exceedingly negative effects.

I believe the body very efficiently and effectively detoxes itself as long as skin, liver and kidneys are intact AND we are eating healthy food and exercising regularly.

Unfortunately, the tendency is to eat crap and sit on our butts at computers all daytyping so a lightening of the load may be in order.

As in many things, care and moderation is the key. (I know, how dull!)wave conversing

A very good and effective method you use. I have some friends who are just finishing up from this same lemonade fast and salt water wash. They are very impressed with it also.

Great that you point out the skin, liver and kidneys... it is good to begin cleansing the liver before starting the detox. Milk Thistle is good for this. You can also "dry-brush" the skin to prepare it.

Moderation! yes! Very Key to remain Balanced!

10 Ways to Help Your Body Detoxify
After a detoxification program, you can cleanse your body daily through diet, supplements and lifestyle practices.

1. Eat plenty of fiber, including brown rice and organically-grown fresh fruits and vegetables. Beets, radishes, artichokes, cabbage, broccoli, spirulina, chlorella, and seaweed are excellent detoxifying foods.

2. Cleanse and protect the liver by taking herbs such as dandelion root, burdock and milk thistle, and drinking green tea.

3. Take vitamin C, which helps the body produce glutathione, a liver compound that drives away toxins.

4. Drink at least 2 quarts of water daily.

5. Breathe deeply to allow oxygen to circulate more completely through your system.

6. Transform stress by emphasizing positive emotions.

7. Practice hydrotherapy by taking a very hot shower for five minutes, allowing the water to run on your back. Follow with cold water for 30 seconds. Do this three times, and then get into bed for 30 minutes.

8. Sweat in a sauna so your body can eliminate wastes through perspiration.

9. Dry-brush your skin or try detoxifying patches or detox foot spas / foot baths to remove toxins through your pores. Special brushes are available at natural products stores.

10. What is the most important way to detoxify? "Exercise," says Bennett. "Yoga or jump-roping are good. One hour every day." Also try qigong, a martial-arts based exercise system that includes exercises specifically for detoxifying or cleansing, as well as many other exercises with specific health benefits.

Although I have little time to rest..... laugh

I do drink lots of water, have given up alcohol and try to eat very little meat.

In the growing season, I eat from the garden.

I avoid processed foods and do a lot of cooking using whole foods.

Since I raise and sell chickens, there are always fresh eggs here.

I'd like to give up caffeine, but coffee still calls to me rolling on the floor laughing

Oh and there is nothing like a batch of collard greens as a spring purgative! wow!

I try to fast at least once a year, for one to three days, the longest has been five.
The senses become sharp,I observe things about my body and mind.
It's a good exercise in will power, and much easier than it sounds.Afterwards I feel elated and deep hapiness, and even the most bland food tastes sensational.Well recommended...and it's free!(like all the best things in life)

Meditation is a helpful tool, as is fasting. I have heard about sungazing as well though I am unable to do this where I am at the moment because its too farkin cold at the appropriate time of day. People who do this swear there is no need to eat at all, among other things. Close as I can get is sunbathing for now; but, can't wait for it to warm up so I can try this sungazing thing.peace

All very good choices Joanie!thumbs up

I do the one cup of coffee before going to work and one while driving in the wee hours, to keep me awake on my run. I know it isn't the best thing for me, but I do try to keep it at a minimum. I add raw sugar, cinnamon and chocolate soy milk when I can....I'm soooo bad!
