Sometimes truth can cause damage.

Silly example.

If a close friend is really ugly, do you tell him so?

What is it going to do to his self esteem?

Capish?

Sort of, 'You're not beautiful' can do the job just as well no?

Ugly or not Ugly is not a thruth.. it is a matter of perception.. what u or I might find unattractive isn't everyones cup of T.. also a person's physical characteristics isn't something they can actually do anything about.. so what can be gained?

What I would do though is subtely say e.g. if an outfit just didn't flatter or looked awful.. say that I preferred another outfit on them or that it wasn't the 'best' look for them.. its hard.. but I wouldn't have a friend look ridiculous and I hope they would do the same for me... we don't always know whats best... unfortunately

YOu have given a typical example of something here that is just an opinion and not a truth. You'd have to define ugly here too. Even quasi modo had his good points.

It's real simple gingerb, if you somebody asks you yes or no or why, do you speak truth?.....you are funny in your ways of spinning the truthsticking out tongue

I would imagine ugliness is universal.

Even with his good points, I am sure we all agree the story line tells us he was ugly!!

Same line of thought would have to define thruth then no?

I think the truth is absolute and inalienable..... you can't argue with it cause it just is.. having said that though.. you have to take into considerations peoples feelings....u can be truthful but you have to be subtle...

There's what she thinks, what he thinks, and the truth is somewhere around about.

To believe you are the sole possessor of the 'truth', and to act in such a fashion would be pure folly.wine

Again it's all a matter of personal opinion. In the storyline he is capable of love and devotion and helps the heroine. To one person his looks might not fit vogues definition but he is not ugly to everyone. It's a personal preference, perception and opinion guided by what an individual learns to "call" or "see as" ugly, usually based on something they have learned from another source.....and therefore not in any sense a truth.

Dunno.

Sometimes I feel that holding back SOME of the thruth may be best, particularly when the WHOLE truth is going to hurt.

This takes me back some years when it was necessary to do this with my mum sort of thing.

It's not lying, to which I do not agree...but....

I agree, you can be truthful but tactful about how you put it but somethings just don't NEED to be said, like if( and they had this in a thread) your mate asks you does my butt look big or honey am I going bald? those kind of things should not be expounded on, could cause a black eyegiggle

Or is it better to keep some things to yourself and hold truths or lies that protect you and others buried at the bottom of the abyss of your consciousness?

Personally, I have told some truths that have totally shocked and hurt some people....some close, some not so close. Some of those truths have actually benefited, and other truths have not. It feels good to tell the truth and it has actually benefited me, then again.....telling the truth has burned some bridges.

Nevertheless, I really don't care I don't have to live with the guilt and whatever choices I made. I am mature enough to accept the responsibilities, consequences, and benefits that come with the choices that I made by way of being totally honest. Can't make everybody happy and sorry to those who can't handle the crystal clear truth.

The truth is always best but there is a time and place for it also how you tell it! I care about the truth but also care about the other person so would never try to hurt someone with the truth! professor

alway the truth will set you free

are those truths related to your persona
dont worry about how it shokc the others

if they are your true friend the shock is that they not expect to realize than, but they are happy to know you ae still open and trust them

are those truth related to some one else, same, aply, but you have to be careful on how you word things, you dont want to hurt them more, that what they will be hurt but knwing the truth
again your friends will apretiate it that you opened their eyes

as for strangers (i incloude there the not close), i do not care what they think
i prefer to be truthfull to myself

but for stranger i do not always have to tell them the truth (i dont mean to lie)

i wil not tell a coworker that he is an idiot
i will keep that thoght for me, and keep the promotion fr myself
none of us will gain anything by me tellling him the truth or a lie (by saying i think he is smart)

I agree..

I don't think the truth is ALWAYS the best way to go..

I really do think.. sometimes in some situations.. the truth really IS better left unsaid.
