MLK was not into violence in order to achieve peace. Michael Jordan should get his own holiday as well....

FYI:
Response to Malcolm's death

After Malcolm's death, Martin Luther King, Jr., sent a telegram to Betty Shabazz, expressing his sadness over "the shocking and tragic assassination of your husband."

While we did not always see eye to eye on methods to solve the race problem, I always had a deep affection for Malcolm and felt that he had a great ability to put his finger on the existence and the root of the problem. He was an eloquent spokesman for his point of view and no one can honestly doubt that Malcolm had a great concern for the problems we face as a race. WIKIPEDIA

cool

I admire Malcom X for trying to make a necessary change for African Americans. I took a couple of courses in African-American history over at Berkeley back in the day, and I was pretty fascinated with Malcom X and read his autobiography.
However, his solutions were absurd (suggesting Afro-Americans move back to Africa), his criticisms were very insensitive....the JFK assassination always comes to mind, and he went a bit overboard in his approach with his impassionate speeches by calling out all white men devils or whatever rant he had that only added fuel to the fire. The thing that really bothered me about him, was that Malcolm criticized the 1963 March on Washington. He refused to see the good in it.
IMO, I always felt that he was flat out envious of MLK, Jr. because of the positive exposure that MLK Jr. received and that MLK Jr. just flat out had a better method , especially by challenging the Constitution in that all men are created equal/liberty part, by peaceful methods through the media that resulted in how America saw the cruelty they endured by standing up for their rights that were granted to them via the Constitution..

Sorry, don't take this personal gilly, but c'mon dude. Black Panther Party holiday? I liked what they stood for, but their approach was all wrong. Their observations were on the spot about the oppressions that Afro-Americans encountered, but like I said, building an army and taking it to the streets was just assinate.

I lived close to Oakland and have heard many perceptions from all walks of life, but nobody well educated ever suggested that the Black Panther Party had great visions for change.

Hi Conrad wave and Gilly wave
The telegram is more a testimony to the greatness of Martin Luther King...
I've only seen the Malcom X movie. I know very very little.
Malcom didn't seem to like white americans much.
Why would they create a national holiday in his memory?
I'm gonna need more convincing here.
