Taking Action to Lower Gas Prices

Posted: Apr 27, 2008, 3:51 PM CST
The Gavel
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi

Across the country, the price of oil keeps getting higher and higher, and American families are getting pummeled hit hard at the pump amidst a weakening economy. Regular gasoline reached $3.56 a gallon this week 23 percent more than a year ago, and more than double the price when President Bush took office. While the Democratic-led Congress has passed a number of key bills to reduce the burden of rising gas prices, the President has threatened to veto each and every one. It is time for the President to end his stubborn opposition and support key House-passed legislation such as the No Oil Producing and Exporting Cartels (NOPEC) Act, The Energy Price Gouging Act, and the Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Tax Act.

This week, Speaker Pelosi urged the President to temporarily suspend deliveries of oil to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), which could cut as much as five to 24 cents off a gallon of gas. Currently, the reserve is nearly 97 percent full; suspending delivery will increase oil supply as well as lower energy prices, by sending the message to stop runaway speculation. This is not an unprecedented action: before the first Gulf War, the first President Bush withdrew oil from the SPR, and the current President Bush withdrew oil following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Unlike Senator McCain's plan to impose a temporary tax moratorium that may not even reach consumers and may not even be passed on to Americans our plan will help consumers instead of helping Big Oil reap even bigger profits.

As Big Oil companies rake in billions of dollars, American families need someone on their side. ConocoPhilips, the third largest oil company, reported this week that its first quarter earnings climbed 17 percent $4.1 billion for the first quarter, a nearly $600 million profit. In the House, Democrats have already passed legislation to fight high gas prices. Now it is time for the President, and his Republican allies in Congress, to stop protecting Big Oil, and start working to bring relief to Americans feeling the pain at the gas pump.

It really chaps me that the idiot shrub said he would VETO any bills regarding lowering the rising cost of fuel!!!very mad
Why is this creature still the President??? It is so obvious that he wants death and destruction to come to our Nation!! Why hasn't Congress Impeached him and his gang??? They are CRIMINALS!!!
All opinions on this are very welcome.

This is very easy to do . Americans should only fill up HALF the gas they normally buy. If you normally but 10 bucks buy 5, if you normally fill up get half tank etc. Also boycott exxon mobil. If just 1/4 of Americans did this and changed their habits , we would see results.

Good idea...but...if we only use 1/2 as much at a time...then Exxon/Mobil would still clear 200 billion in profits this year, in stead of the 400 billion they claimed for last year.

Here's another idea...but it would take the participation of all to work, and less stressful to the consumer.

Continue to get the gas you normally would, BUT NOT from Exxon/Mobil!!! Eventually, Exxon/Mobil would not see any revenue from sales, while the other company's are showing continued sales. If you were in this situation...wouldn't you consider lowering the prices...to create resumed sales? I know I would. It would be maybe a way to start a Gas War, between the oil company's!(remember those, way back when...17cents/19cents per gallon) It's time somebody showed Exxon and other oil company's that being at the top, CAN also be at the bottom.

Remember people...WE CAN bring them down...(hey...we're the one's that put them at the top...by buying their product)!!!

cheers

Subject: Dropping Gas Prices See if we can make a difference

.

This was sent by a retired Coca Cola executive. It came from one of his engineer buddies who retired from Halliburton. If you are tired of the gas prices going up AND they will continue to rise this summer, take time to read this please.

Phillip Hollsworth offered this good idea.
This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May!
It's worth your consideration. Join the resistance!!!!

I hear we are going to hit close to $ 4.00 a gallon by next summer, and it might go higher!! Want gasoline prices to come down?

We need to take some intelligent, united action. The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas.

It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.
BUT, whoever thought of this idea has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read on and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $2.00 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $3.19 for regular unleaded in my town.

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 - $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace..not sellers.

With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action.

The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas.

But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL.

If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices.
If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.

But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x10 = 3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth group of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers.
If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted!

If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all!

(If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people.... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am . so trust me on this one.

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days !!!

I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you!
Acting together we can make a difference.
cheering

I don't get the point of this. You still have to buy the same amount, you just have to stop for it twice as often. How does that help? You use gas every time you turn off the engine and restart it, so you're wasting gas with an extra stop.

I've already cut back on my driving as much as I can. No unnecessary trips, combine errands, etc. And I never buy Exxon, Mobil, or any brand name for that matter, I go to the cheapest no-name station I can find. I figure if I fill up, I've saved $ probably, cause it's gonna be higher the next time I need gas, so I put it off as long as possible.

We could save a lot more if all the private jets flown by the enviromentalists like Al Gore were grounded.

The thing that burns my ass is they are raising the prices just to screw us not because they have too. When gas hits 5 to 7 dollars a gallon (and it will) Americans will be forced to drive less....the human race is a mess, we claim to be the smartest living thing, but a slug has more sense for it race. Crazy as it sounds, it is true..

Ok everyone, lets get the thread back on track.

We have all seen the emails about boycotting Exxon Mobil and I posted a thread last month in which we discussed many of the methods mentioned here, to try to put a hurtin on the oil companies. Fact is, if none of us bought fuel for a month, it would not hurt them.
I have a scooter which gets 85mpg and a bicycle. Don't think about stopping my Peterbilt from going down the highway cos it has to feed me and it barely does more than feed the fuel tank!!!
I posted this thread to see if anyone really believes the US government will be able to get this situation under control????
Is anyone else outraged that Bush intends to VETO the House and Senate on any bills introduced to try to lower fuel costs to the people?
Bush is being a dictator and not listening to the people or the house or the senate. Can anything be done about this?

that being said, if you put 5 dollars in, it burns it faster than if you put 20 dollars in, so this makes no sense.

As for me, for the summer, I am junking my van (steel is at an all time high), and I am going to get a bike. After school starts, I will be getting a gas friendly vehicle, and I will use it sparingly.

Unfortunately, you are paying for gas in every way. The price of food and merchandise is going up due to the gas prices. In the spring and summer, if you have the means to, buying from a local farmer is much better than from the grocery store. Their prices are usually lower, the quality is higher, plus you are helping your neighbors.

I'm with you sister!!! I have stopped buying gas unless absolutely necessary. I have started only pumping $20 at a time and I only use it in an emergency. If the rest of us would do the same, maybe it would help in some small way. I take the bus if at all possible and walk the rest of the time. I think I'll invest in a pair of rollerskates...laugh laugh

Hey, rollerskates are great! Good exercise too! But Tennessee is pretty hilly, could be hard to go uphill???dunno
Yes, we should all do our part to conserve and find other methods of transportation when available.

Quite frankly I am one of the few people who enjoys watching gas go through the roof. It is having the desired effect of forcing people out of their F250's V10 Dodge pick ups, behemouth motorhomes Lincoln towne cars, Ford Excursions, Hummers and SUV's. Every time I hear somebody complain about how much it is killing them to fill up their SUV I just say to myself, you did it to yourself when you bought that whale and your piggishness is doing it to me also!
I haven't owned a vehicle that gets less than 30 MPG in over 25 years. In fact my 97 Mazda Protege gets 43 on the highway.

The people I feel for are the farmers who have to pay through the nose for fuel to bring food to everybodies table. Is it any wonder that food prices are skyrocketting and people are literally starving to death? But hey, it's not your fault, gas was a buck a gallon when you bought that gas guzzler.
