I am amazed with myself for coming around to this point of view, being an anti Vietnam war peacenik (I was 18 years old in November of 1966) and lost many friends in the conflict and in 1966 I almost joined the ROTC... I ended up being involved with opening up my fellow citizens eyes to the wrongness of the oppressive political actions the USA at that time. If I had not seen my friends "pushed to the wall," if the fighting were to be done by a professional army, i.e. a mercenary army, it would have been so much more susceptible to political cover-up and white washing like what we see in this Iraq thing.
I mean nobody has to go today if they don't want, right? There is always some poor person who needs the bucks so steps into the uniform. Instead of it being a member of the citizenry who is randomly selected to honorably represent the viewpoints of the nations democratically elected government.
Yes, it easier to hire somebody else to do the dirty work but this is the one thing that cannot be avoided.
Everybody (men and women, world wide, between the ages of 18 and 24) should be required to preform 18 months of service (not necessarily military) for their country.
Think about it, people!
Put some bite back into the 'ol "Hell no, we won't go!"

The Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution makes involuntary servitude illegal under any US jurisdiction whether at the hands of the US government or in the private sphere, except as punishment for a crime: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." cool

I would not mind serving my country and fighting side by side with American forces to stop terrorism. I am proud to be an American, and military men and women are fighting for freedom for all countries from the reign of terrorism.

God Bless America!!!

My ex was going to be drafted if he didn't sign up before his number came up. He entered the USMC and went to Nam towards the end of it. He experienced sh** that gave him PTSD and he is just glad that he made it home.
I was born in 1970, but from all the history I have learned, I know that I would have been against going to Vietnam. But I would not have lost faith in my country's military, it isn't the troops fault for being called to fight.

Oil...this war isn't just over oil, this is about the terrorists that want to keep power over people and scare them away from a diplomatic government and keep them from ever having a fair election, freedom for women, better healthcare and better educated children. Look at what our men and women are doing there now...rebuilding communities, protecting the streets the best they can, and trying to find those who wish to stop progression of a new government and society.

Slickness, I salute you for serving, even though you were drafted. You gave service to your country and survived one of the worst wars that this country was in. God Bless You.

And to those who think that this war isn't worth fighting, that is your opinion. Maybe y'all should be the first drafted and sent to fight..devil

Kid.

I think i agree with your sentiments, i read that post and my mouth dropped open!

I think some people will believe anything their Government tells them, and that is what they need from a fair percentage of the population, basically blind faith.

Fortunately, i think most people can see through this now adays but the insulting part is always that if you dont buy into all this your not backing the military, your not patriotic or your a coward.

The Bush camp has played this card repeatedly, and it disgusts me.

Free tip for anyone who has an opinion about terrorism, look at where the funding comes from....perhaps the lady who who knew best should email Donald Rumsfield and ask him where Al Qaeda got their funding and supplies.

One day hopefully this stupid mentality of blind faith will evaporate.
