WHO ARE THE BEST FILMMAKERS ? SHOULD AFRICAN PEOPLE BE BANNED FROM MAKING FILMS ?

We need more African Films... film is a good way to get potitical and social messages accross.. artistic freedom.. also being that Africa is such an astoundingly beautiful country it would be a good way for it to exploit its resources in a profitable but non pervasive way...

Ireland has done that to lucrative effect.. introduced tax breaks to filmakers and opened up studios... our film industry has benefited and the economy has benefited....

As to the first part... I love European Cinema (French, Spanish).. Irish Film is getting really hot also

Just a lil note to those who were offended and critisised Gilly... it was a Rhetorical question.... one which he answered in the negative.. he just wanted to provoke critical, and honest discussion.. if u can't do it here.. then where can you do it?? laugh

Geez.. it's like 'don't mention the war'... not mentioning the war is not going to erase its negative aspects retrospectively... from reading Gilly's posts it appears that African Cinema.. faces significant challenges (in the real world) in terms of funding and industry respect, despite it relevant and informative content.. this is clearly not a good thing..

In loads of ways Gilly.. more funding, greater independance (don't have to pander to American audience... ) this has led to better writing, acting, cinematography... and overall a more organic and honest product....

Once was just about a friendship really... it was very romantic, but in a subtle way... also the musical score was great

wave The cinema here has 3 films showing at anyone time normally one in English and 2 Turkish with

English sub titles. Friends have told me that there is alot more freedom of the kinds of films now made

here than 10 yrs ago, they are dealing with more controversial issues questioning culture and lfe style

e.g. recently i saw a film where 2 guy's were wrongly imprisioned for over 20 yrs, it showed police

corruption and the legal system at it's worst, a few years ago this kind of film would not have been

allowed. And yes we have DVD shop's where we can get all the recent films in English with Turkish sub

titles

i'm soooo excited morgan ..i can't tell you how excited i am !

dancing banana dancing banana dancing banana dancing banana dancing banana

anyway i'm going to try and read a bit about turkish cinema in wikepdeidia or some where like that before i come back on line !... tell i 'll tell you something girl freedom of speech for filmmakers in certain parts of the world leaves a lot to be admired !...censoreship is very strong and there rules about what you can make or not make films about !

scold

i'm only at the beginners levels level in film theory ( well a little bit more than that ...but only just started taking it a bit more seriously and started handing in homework and stuff !

head banger

one thing i'm beginning to learn is that there are good things and bad things about governments ( especially in certain parts of eastern europe and parts of the middle east) about sponsorship of the arts ....and even not allowing certain films to be made by law

professor

one of the level 2 subjects i can't wait to study is realism and idealogy in european cinema !... what makes the french tick ? the germans tick ? the sweedish tick ? and things like what films do turkish people make best ?

dunno

by the way whats turkish tv like ?

1. is there nudity ?

2. is there any sweering ?

3. is there any gay or lesbian issues ?

4. is it religous tv ?

5. what type of foreign films do they show ?

6. do they show people taking drugs etc ?

7. can you go and watch a sex film in the cinema ?

( thats a good example of freedom of expressiom.... whether you want to watch a sex film or not interested in gay or lesbian tv or films or not.... is not the point its just a guideline to censorship values )!

8. that film about the two guys that are wrongly imprisioned is a good example of that ( they're beginning to allow it to be shown now )!

thumbs up

9. but before ten years ago you most probaly was'nt even allowed to make a thing to do with anything about the government without prior consent and the government controlling what is shown the film before you walk away with the finnished product ...am i right or am i wrong ?

conversing

10. what are the rights of fimmakers like in turkey now that they're about to become part of the european union ( by the way i'm asking YOU that question because WE'RE the ones relaxing and talking it )!

dunno

[quote=gillyloves69]PART 1

PART 2

11. i'd also love to hear from other people that really want to " TALK ABOUT FILM " about the rights of fillmmakers in places like

A. BURMA

B. CHINA

C. THE SOVIET UNION

D. ZIMBAWAE

E. AND OTHER PLACES WITH STRICT MILITARY OR RELIGIOUS REGIMES ?

are they free to make the documentary films that thy want to make

cheering

12. is that a good thing or a bad thing ?

how would a filmmaker like Michael Moore get on trying to make a film in some of those places ?

13. i don't know what you think of people like Michael More ? or whether you seen his films like FARENHEIGHT 9/11, SICKO, RODGER AND ME, ETC ?

14. also whats turkey like for art films ? reality tv ? and for showing cheap films for the people made by the people film sometimes just using a cheap handycam ?

15. does it encourage ordinary people to freely express theirselves and become filmmakers ?

dunno

lots to talk about once i've finnished unpacking my likes and looking up the turkish film industry on the internet

ok Gilly answer what i can with the help of a Turkish friend

Turkish TV is full of sit coms, similiar to the ones made in the UK in the 70's /8o's very 2:4 children and quite slapstick, also love there chat shows which are very theatrical and over the top and plenty of programmes on the life in Turkey another favourite seem to be Mafia style thrillers.

1. some nudity on TV after 12 on certain channels
2. no swearing.
3. gay /lesbian characters but nothing explicite
4.a little religious tv, again certain channels
5. All countries films but in Turkish and sometimes censored in the sexy bits.
6. yes
7. In the big cities you can see sex films in cinema
8. there is goverment control on all films
9.
10.everything here is more relaxed as they try to get into Europe, including the kind of films they make
