We need more African Films... film is a good way to get potitical and social messages accross.. artistic freedom.. also being that Africa is such an astoundingly beautiful country it would be a good way for it to exploit its resources in a profitable but non pervasive way...

Ireland has done that to lucrative effect.. introduced tax breaks to filmakers and opened up studios... our film industry has benefited and the economy has benefited....

As to the first part... I love European Cinema (French, Spanish).. Irish Film is getting really hot also

Hiya Gilly

Africa is not a country, it's a continent. We are all black, does that make it all confusing?

In loads of ways Gilly.. more funding, greater independance (don't have to pander to American audience... ) this has led to better writing, acting, cinematography... and overall a more organic and honest product....

Once was just about a friendship really... it was very romantic, but in a subtle way... also the musical score was great

i'm really looking forward to what you got to say about what you think about films from other parts of the world !

ok Gilly answer what i can with the help of a Turkish friend

Turkish TV is full of sit coms, similiar to the ones made in the UK in the 70's /8o's very 2:4 children and quite slapstick, also love there chat shows which are very theatrical and over the top and plenty of programmes on the life in Turkey another favourite seem to be Mafia style thrillers.

1. some nudity on TV after 12 on certain channels
2. no swearing.
3. gay /lesbian characters but nothing explicite
4.a little religious tv, again certain channels
5. All countries films but in Turkish and sometimes censored in the sexy bits.
6. yes
7. In the big cities you can see sex films in cinema
8. there is goverment control on all films
9.
10.everything here is more relaxed as they try to get into Europe, including the kind of films they make

wave

hi morganlee ! thanks for that information !

whats your favourite films by the way ?

Gilly, as you know, the film industry is multi-faceted and due to that, plus the facts of public demand and vested interests, it is not easy to find a position on this. However, it is my belief that we should forget where a film came from, who made it,etc. Is it good ? That is the only yardstick.

Also, please do note that a great many non American film makers are allowed a voice in the Hollywood film industry.

Who are the best film makers ? The people who make the best films of course, irrespective of race, creed or colour. As far as I am aware, nobody is these days banned from making films on the grounds of race, creed, ethnic origin or colour. Neither is anybody denied access to a public audience.

It,s high time we all just got on with things and stopped being obssessed with shouting foul where there is non. Either what you do is good enough or it isn,t. We,ve come a long way since the sixties, thank god, please lets not keep going back to the bad old days. Move on.cool

I studied fil at Uni and I have seen beautiful films from Japan, India, France. However they were not beautiful films because of where they camed from, they were beautiful because of the people who made them.

Try Panther Ponchali from India, or Dodes Kaden from Japan. Or,even better, both simply from people who made beautiful films.

Could tell you loads Gilly, where to start, that,s the problem. Try Ken Loache,s work (something like The Gamekeeper, for example). A great film maker because of his realism and social commentary. Better still, get down to some art house cinemas where you can see lots of stuff from all over the world.thumbs up

Every time I think gilly has come up with the dumbest question ever he comes up with one that's even better.

The obvious answer is no, Africans should not be banned from making films. Why the question, is anyone doing that? dunno confused
