School shooting tragedies are the price you pay for a society that allows widespread holding of arms. I want to make a point to show that this is not true. At one time, in our Country, almost every single citizen owned a gun and knew how to use it. There definitely was widespread holding of arms. What has changed? What has made people irresponsible gun owners? We must put the blame where it is due. Not on the widespread ownership of guns, but on what has made people the way they are today. The TV plays a major role in developing the minds, personalities and belief systems of people. There are many violent episodes on the TV. How do the people handle their disagreements durring these episodes? If you don't like someone, or what they did to you, you BLOW THEM AWAY!!! Our children are being trained and programmed through what is broadcast on the TV and the movies they rent. So are we, if we watch the violent programming! Also, teachers are no longer allowed to discipline children in the schools. When I went to school, if you showed disrespect to classmates or teachers, you went to the office and got your rear paddled HARD! There is no discipline allowed at school or at home. It is time to quit placing blame on the guns and blame ourselves, who allow legislation to be made, disallowing discipline. We have done this to ourselves!!! Fear the children... you have made them into MONSTERS!!!

Robbie, I hate to tell you but things are changing here in Canada. The number of firearm related offences is on the rise.
When I was in Vancouver a couple of months ago I drove up to a crime scene where someone had been assassinated gangland style in their vehicle. The police had arrived only a minute beforehand and it was a bit bizarre seeing it all. Not something that happens all that often on the praries, but it does.
The number of gun related homocides are increasing and Vancouver's rate has doubled since last year.
Edmonton has had it's fair share as well, even in the neighbourhood I grew up in. I've had a .22 LR, 9mm and a 30:06 pointed at me in the past and I don't like it! This is in B.F. nowhere, Alberta, not Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver. Mind you per capita, it was the murder capital of Canada for a number of years.
I do agree that a lot of firearms should be yanked off the market altogether and restrictions on some people owning anything other than a spoon should be implemented.

I hunted from the time I was 8 until about 6 years ago. I learned proper handling, storage and use from my father who was in the military and also grew up with firearms as a kid on a farm. There was no F'n around or else! My dad meant business! I can understand why and appreciate it too.

A small aside, I do think the Rem700 is a nice antelope rifle but my choice was always a .303 No4 Mk1. A bit of a jackhandle but I could rely on it in grizzly country.

i am terrified of how the increase in guns in this country has led to rise in gun related crimes- mainly amnog the criminal element, but recently some young kids have been caught in the crossfire.
also children are children- you can teach them till you are blue in the face about how guns are for adults etc etc, but that won't take away their natural curiosity. if your nighbours child accidentally shoots yours- will you feel any better that your dead)

having guns readily available, means that a petty argument that may have ended in a punch up, is more likely to end up in shootings and death- I know what i'm talking about- i worked in a surgical unit in a majr US city and the number of gun shot victims i looked after, where the cause of the shooting was ridiculous things like a game of cards played in stifling temperatures with alcohol taken, would disgust any reasonable person

On the heels of Obama's comment about bitter Americans clinging to their guns, the prestigious Wall Street Journal has dug up some stats from 2006 that show gun owners are actually happier and wealthier than people who do not own weapons.
According to the research 36 percent of gun owners claim to be 'very happy' compared with 30 percent of people without guns.
The study also revealed that gun owners have the same level of education as non-gun owners and earn an average of 32 percent more per year.
Last but certainly not least, in 1996 gun owners spent about 15 percent less of their time feeling 'outraged at something somebody had done'.
perhaps I should have put this under the category of Health , Wealth and Happiness..lol. Taken at face value, it implies a lot as it begs a lot of questions. The people that made the two 'Naked Gun' movies would certainly have ample material here for another one; any NRA members may expect to find the article prominently posted at all the various NRA indoor ranges and at Natl. HQ in Washington DC... What could the new movie be called aside from the obvious: 'Naked and Warm'...%D
