I read something a while back, when I was dealing with my ex. Do I resent what I'm doing? If so, is it really a loving choice? Made me stop and think, I did have the choice about what I did, so if I chose to do it, I shouldn't resent it, no one is making me.

Don't compare yourself unfavorably to your step-father. He has reasons for his choices. Take care of you, make the choices that are right for you now, then you will be able to give support to your mum in a more loving way.
