He will always be the first black president, just as Hillary would be the first woman president, and just as JFK was the first Irish Catholic president and so on. This, in my opinion, does not make this a racial statement, it is merely fact. And, so what?? Being the first in something because you happen to be of a different color or gender or religious faith does not mean that you were elected BECAUSE of this or IN SPITE OF this. I am excited and thrilled that the days of "Pale, male, Yale" may be finally broken in our country. My vote will be cast for the person that I think will best represent my viewpoints; the one who will be the best leader and best voice for our country in these most difficult times. My vote has never been "the white guy" even though it has always been for a white guy, until now. Yes, some may cast their vote according to race or gender, but I definitely do not think that this would be anything more than a very small minority of people. In a way, I feel that every time there is a "first black" (male or female) or "first woman" to achieve something in any endeavor (sports, politics, science, the arts, whatever the case), this is like the "small step for man, giant leap for mankind" statement. Each of these achievements is like another swing of an axe on the wall that otherwise divides us. It's slowly breaking and crumbling, but it is happening. Thankfully so.
