Poison Ivy Rash...Need A Cure...Please Help

Somehow I contracted poison ivy. Not even sure how I got it. But it continues to march it's path on my body in spite of putting the corisone creams on from the doctor. It even hurts in areas on the chest where it's heaviest. The creams take care of the itching but not the spread of it. I wash my hands frequently and keep changing my clothes. It's almost 2 weeks now.
I'm hoping not to have to take prednisone as I'm concerned about side effects.

I was amazed at how little it takes to cause a rash. I was amazed to learn that 1/4 ounce of the urishiol oil could cause a rash on every person on this planet who is sensitive to it and that it could last on an inatimate object for up to 5 years and even survive in bitter cold temperatures on the object outside.

One would think that with all of modern medicine out there, the cure would be so simple.

Seriously, does anyone have any proven non-painful cures

:frustrated

I've googled and read alot on this rash and seen some pictures that I can most certainly compare to. I'm seriously hoping that some CSer's have some serious good advice on what worked for them or their family members. I've since learned that poison ivy isn't just the 3 leaf plant but there are at least 5 different varieties and they look different.

It's possible you may not have removed the oil from all surfaces and are re-contaminating yourself. Make sure you wash the clothes you've been wearing...the car seats...anything that may have come in contact...there is something else that's recommended, but I can't remember the name of it....I'll try to remember to ask the gal I work with what it's called & come back on here & post it.

I'm using tecnu, calagel, cortisone 1% cream and also the 2.5% cream by prescription. I wash my clothes everyday, change the sheets, alcoholed my body, then washed with soap and water. I don't mind the rash with it's healing time but what bothers me is the new breakouts. I'm beginning to wonder if it's in my bloodstream. I have no fevers.

Whomever could find an immediate cure should be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize.
Having a large amount of poison ivy rash on your body is certainly no fun!! Grrrr!!

Hi Mastic!! Yes, it's true about such a small amount recking such havoc. I was amazed when I googled poison ivy and read that on several of the sites. What a warfare weapon it would be to disable the enemy in no time.

Calamine Lotion, The oils from the plant will affect you different in area according to the amount of oils on your skin. If you got a lot in a place it will break out first and worst. other lighty oiled places break out later. this is why most people believe it spreads. put plenty of lotion and don't scratch....(infection). Just look pretty in pink for a while.

sorry!bouquet of flowers

Hi Valleygirl. I will try it. I have read on some of the internet sites about tea bags.
I guess I can try it on some areas where the rash is the heaviest and see if it works. I don't have Salada tea but I have Lipton green tea bags. I will heat some up now and try it and see if the rash will at least fade.

I appreciate any serious ideas that will work. If anyone has had poison ivy, you know that I am not kidding around here. I feel like a walking "Typhoid Mary."

I just found these but must stress I have no medical knowledge and I dont think we even have the problem over here. I think calamine is good for anything itchy and oral antihistamines too.

Oatmeal - Simply boil up the oatmeal in water as you normally would. Let it cool for a few minutes, then apply warm to the effected area, Ideally, the mixture should be applied until a thick layer forms. It will harden as it dries. Most sufferers swear by this treatment, which is sometimes combined with a tablespoon or two of baking soda for extra relief from itch and oozing.

Baking soda - This treatment has also become a classic homemade cure, made by mixing 3 teaspoons of baking soda with 1 teaspoon of water until a thick paste forms. Apply to the rash and let dry. Another tried-and-true method for many poison ivy sufferers is full immersion in a soothing baking soda bath.

Vinegar - Just sprinkle liberally on rash or blisters for instant relief from itch.

Although the smell may not be to everybody's liking, vinegar seems to help draw out the "poison" from poison ivy while it also helps healing. White distilled vinegar, or apple cider vinegar, seem to work best.

Banana peel - Touted by many as a homemade "miracle cure", the inside of a banana peel rubbed on poison ivy rashes seems to bring instant, cooling relief.

By some accounts, banana skins may even do the trick when all other poison ivy treatment fails.

Aloe Vera gel - A logical alternative, aloe vera is known to heal minor skin cuts and bring relief from sunburn, so apply liberally to effected areas to help sooth the itch and aid in healing.

Dishwashing liquid - Perhaps the most practical treatment of all, dishwashing liquid's anti-grease agents make it a common-sense remedy for poison ivy when applied liberally from the bottle at full strength. Simply wash off with cool water.

Trish, I'm starting now with the tea bag regiment. I will later on try perhaps the baking soda and vinegar regimen that you wrote about. I saw the banana peel remedy on the internet and did wonder about it.
I'm beginning to look like the head to toe pink girlscout already with this rash. I have no doubt that it will eventually resolve but until then.....ohhhhh!sigh
