Since the beginning of year 2000, the United Counties of Prescott and Russell has taken over the planning and management of our public forest - the Larose Forest. This new management role of the Larose Forest is an excellent opportunity to maximise and promote this important natural resource for the whole of the Prescott and Russell community.
Since its creation early in this century, the Larose Forest has always represented an incredible resource for the entire community of Prescott and Russell. With a total land area of 10 540 hectares (26 044 acres), the Larose Forest is the second largest plantation forest in Southern Ontario.
In the region of Prescott and Russell, it is the Counties agronomist, Mr Ferdinand Larose, who undertakes in 1919 the creation of the first plantation on abandoned farms in the region of the Brook, now known as Bourget. Over a period of ten years, reclaimed lands would become the forest that bears the name of this man of vision, the Larose Forest.
Under the management of the Ministry, the Larose Forest has attained its maturity and is now an important natural and cultural resource for the region. In addition, through several different mandates for the Ministry, the forest has served many functions as a natural reserve, a recreational area and as a natural laboratory for research and development of forestry resources.
The Larose Forest is situated in the region of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell approximately 20 kilometres to the east of the City of Ottawa. Although the central block of the forest rests on the boundaries of the municipalities of Clarence-Rockland to the north and The Nation to the south, plantations are also found in the Municipalities of Alfred-Plantagenet and Russell.
The Larose Forest is, through its cultural, social and economic wealth, a unique resource which must be enhanced and preserved for the entire community of Prescott and Russell. It is important to ensure that, according to its mission, the Larose Forest gains a key place which will permit the promotion of the Larose Forest as being the natural reserve of the region of Prescott and Russell.
