My DOG is Obsessed!!!

Posted: May 12, 2008, 9:08 PM CST
I have a little dog, part wire-haired terrier and part shar-pei. I have had her 10 years, since she was a pup.
We recently moved to the country. Lots of field mice around.
I set out some glue traps over the past month, to catch the mice.
3 traps caught mice. My dog found all 3, moved the traps out to the middle of the floor, so I would find them to dispose of them. She found another mouse inside a closet, not on a trap, and brought it to me.

I have had cats do this in the past.
I was not aware that a dog would do it.

Ever since she found the first mouse, she has become obsessed with "mousing". She is always sniffing around inside and outside the house. She spends a lot of time under my car, looking for something. When we get inside the car to go somewhere, she gets in the back seat and starts pawing at the corners of the seat and sniffing. She won't quit!

Has she discovered a new pass time to keep her from being bored?
Will this ever pass?
Am I stuck with a mouser dog?
Anyone else ever have this problem?

help

Terriers are well known for seeking out and dispensing with vermin. There's not much you can do about her "mousing", just deal with it as best you can. wine On the bright side, at least she's found a hobby and isn't begging for constant treats, etc...

I have two dogs that enjoy going "toading". They will seek out and bring me toads. Not that it's a bad thing, but I'm rather fond of the toads who help keep the bugs down around the property.I've even named them- One is Wart and the other is Lump. One would think that once the dogs had been "toad", they'd think the amphibians would taste just dreadful along with the foaming mouths, but nope! It's a head scratcher for sure. confused I suppose it could be worse......dunno

I help train dogs...do some research on the 2 breeds. Get all the info you can on personality traits, temperment, etc. It is important that you find exactly what the breeds were specifically bred for. You should be able to find helpful hints on how to break this particular habit. Best of luck to you and I hope this helps.

Way out in the yard, the farthest distance from the house.

I do not think that is drawing them. I leave the house door open on nice days. Perhaps a mommy mouse came inside and had a litter?
But she smells them all over the property. Even goes under the barn sometimes.

We have a Chihuahua living in the border house that I live in. It will hunt the mice and rats that come in from the cannal that runs threw the back yard. There is somthing in his genetics that makes him do that , he is very efficent zelous and ruthless. For us it is not a problem , i'd rather a dead rat than a live one.

Your dog is probably proud of Her finding the rodent and is likely thinking that she is presenting you with gifts. Be flattered and if it is a problem then talk to your vet , maby you can train her to simply put them in the rubbish can. It is amasing what can be done with training. One of my past roomates had a cat that was trained to use the litterbox , I have no clue how they trained her but every time after she used it she would bounce downstairs in a psychotic glee that scared the smurf out of me.

Several years ago I lived in a house that had ten cats. One night wile playing on my computer I noticed some movement on the side of my monitor, it was a mouse. I did not like the idear of a mouse in my room so I went downstairs and fetched a cat. I put the cat down and she snifed around and then turned to me and well of course cats dont speak but the look said " smells like a mouse , you should fix that'.
So ten cats in the house but i'm the one chasing the mouse around my room, I did chase it , I could hear it here and there and moved furniture with bat in hand. I nener found the mouse but I did run it out of my room.

You can't get an exterminator to get rid of mice, perhaps your problem is not a problem (well perhaps scratching at your seats in the car could be bad but why is she doing that, it may mean that there are mice in your car or at least visiting your car)

You answered your own question - she's a terrier, and a LOT of the terrier breeds were bred specifically to catch rats, so probably mice too!! laugh

The mother of the dog in my pic is an 80lb American bulldog. She was the best mouser I have ever seen. Her daughter, my dog Prissy is obsessed with a squirrel in my back yard. She has caught it several times and never hurts it. She will play with it for a while and turn it loose. Then start hunting and trying to catch it again.

So I know what ya mean! lol

We have a pit bull lab mix that is infaxuated with a squirrel in the yard. It will never catch the squirrel , the dog just simply does not have the dexterity. The enthusiam is inspiring however, her eyes light up and there is a definite determination to succede that is daunted by a creature that can turn on a dime , chased by a dog that can not.
