Yea i have problems with cannabis. I support people with mental health problems. And Cannabis has been a contributer to 75% of my clients psychosis. And now skunk is female plant - that contains high levels of psychotropic substances. I can forsee even more mental health problems in the future.

These are articles read on Cannabis and in my opinion from what i have seen through my work bear out these findings

Depression

A study following 1600 Australian school-children, aged 14 to 15 for seven years, found that while children who use cannabis regularly have a significantly higher risk of depression, the opposite was not the case - children who already suffered from depression were not more likely than anyone else to use cannabis. However, adolescents who used cannabis daily were five times more likely to develop depression and anxiety in later life.

T

Schizophrenia

Three major studies followed large numbers of people over several years, and showed that those people who use cannabis have a higher than average risk of developing schizophrenia. If you start smoking it before the age of 15, you are 4 times more likely to develop a psychotic disorder by the time you are 26. They found no evidence of self-medication. It seemed that, the more cannabis someone used, the more likely they were to develop symptoms.

Why should teenagers be particularly vulnerable to the use of cannabis? No one knows for certain, but it may be something to do with brain development. The brain is still developing in the teenage years – up to the age of around 20, in fact. A massive process of ‘neural pruning’ is going on. This is rather like streamlining a tangled jumble of circuits so they can work more effectively. Any experience, or substance, that affects this process has the potential to produce long-term psychological effects.

Recent research in Europe, and in the UK, has suggested that people who have a family background of mental illness – and so probably have a genetic vulnerability anyway - are more likely to develop schizophrenia if they use cannabis as well.

this is all very true but happens to a select few who are suseptable to these illnesses in the first place. I personally have been smoking skunk since I was 14 years old on a regular basis and suffer from none of the above and in your line of work it is normal that you come across a lot of people who suffer from the above . I think more people suffer from the illnesses related to alcohol and tabacco and I would like to remind you all that in 3000 years no one has died from the consumcion of cannabis...

I totally agree with you as i have support people who have alcohol dependence all well. And yes some people a more susceptible than others.

However going back to cannabis .There a higher risk if you or anyone of your family have a history of mental health problems including depression developing schizophrenia because skunk is a stronger strain this becomes higher again.

I do feel warnings should go out if you have a family history of mental illness or depression beware.

I think it has to be put in perspective.
Of course a drug like pot (i love that term,
so sixties) has its down side, just like all
others.
I have experienced drug taking and drug
takers since the late sixties, think i've seen
it all.
I have lost many good friends, seen lives
ruined and families torn apart.
Drug abuse is a terrible thing, there are no
winners, except of course the dealers.
Funny thing is though, i have never come
across anyone who's life has been ruined
by smoking pot. Heroin addicts, crack heads,
alcoholics (by far the biggest group) all
falling by the wayside, whilst the dope smokers,
in my experience, have appeared to have just
got on with their lives.
Seems to me that if a person is going to abuse
a drug, that is to say, overdo it, i think they should
play safe and stick to the old wacky backy.
On the other hand, if you can take your drugs in
moderation, maybe even the dreaded 'drink' is
reasonably safe.

peace

I think its quite disturbing that young kids should
take drugs of any kind to alter their state of
consciousness.
Drug taking at such an early age is sure to cause
problems in later life.

If you drink alcohol everyday, you are going to have problems.
If you smoke pot everyday, you are going to have problems.
A drink or a joint here and there is perfectly okay.

Oh, if you are going to post studies, can you please cite the sources for those of us who would like to have a look and cross reference.
Some studies are very subjective considering the subjects they take and where and how they focus their studies on.

I never tried it, never would. If you do pot, that's a major turn off. *I* concider it a drug, like any other drug, and anyone who says otherwise is just looking for an excuse to make it more "ok". I don't date people who smoke pot, then again, I don't really date drinkers either. I don't have bad habits like that, and I don't want someone who does.
