My Dear CS friends

Thought I will use your help. I am currently doing my last year (hopefully) to complete Maters in Business Administration degree. This will be my third degree (Bachelors and Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering). I have applied for a job internationally and it seems that qualifications obtained in South Africa are seen as substandard. My opinion is that this is not true, but let’s not goes into that now.

Based on my experienced I have decided to enroll for a Doctorate degree in Business Administration next year or the year after, but preferably at a University in the US, UK or Australia (distant learning). I have enquired at a few Universities but do not know how highly these Universities are regarded. Admission requirements still need to be finalized and I do not know giving the stated fact above if I will be accepted. Here is the list. Any suggestions of alternative institutions will also be highly appreciated as I do want to end up with a qualification that is worth something internationally.

GIBS – Gordon Institute of Business – South Africa/UK
Deakin University – Australia
MGSM – Australia
St Ambrose University – Davenport, Iowa
University of Phoenix
Boston University
Colorado State University

Regards

Frik

Hi Frik,
All teh above are great univ. and there are plenty others who offer online programs and Phd even.

My advice - if you already have the two univ. degrees , there is no need for a Phd just to get an iternational job. There are smarter ways to do that and you seem more than qualified.

The south african univ. are as good as any, you just need to know where to look for work and build a career avoiding the big stones on the way; take a smaller job with an international comp, get out of SA, grow inside the comp and when you're strong enough, you will see they will not only accept you internationally, but they will be impressed with your qualifications.

Just don't target yet the big fish as the first option, the reaction might bring you down and it doesn't have to be like that.

Good luck!

Decide which countries you're interested in living first to ascertain the information that you require ......... I just recently watched a program that was discussing the plight of foreign doctors in Canada who are ending up working in bakeries, driving taxis etc. as they are unable to practice their profession. Of course, doctors are not the only ones in this same boat ..... so many end up going to the U.S. because this country will recognize their educational achievements.

Thanks you Xtabentun

I just want to be sure that I chose a reputable institution. Will apply to all and see which one gives me recognition from prior learning.

Things in Africa are really not going well. It is sad to see how much Africa (South Africa, Zimbabwe, and certain other African countries) has gone backwards over the last 10 odd years. South Africa is the country with the highest brain drain (qualified people leaving the country) in the world. It is difficult to explain why (and there are specific reasons for that), but even if I live in another country 1 day, I will always be passionate about Africa. It is a great holiday destination with great views and yes great people too.

Hi Frik,

Nice to meet you. I hope my info helps. That is a answer in part or total to your question about Bus Administration degree porgrams
at least here in the US.

There are a group of Univeristies in the country that have the 'top ratings' for Business Administration degree programs here. Universities like:

Harvard, Yale, University of Michigan, Princeton, MIT, University of
Chicago, Colegate and a few others.

These I would call the elites of Business Administration in country.
Most run a online education program so you can take classes on line.
Most all will have degrees from Bachelor, to Masters, to Doctrates.

Under the elitest you have a very large and broad range of Univeristies and Colleges that have Business Aministration degree
programs. Some will only go to Bachelor level, others to Masters and then some will strong deplartment in a field of Business and offer the
Doctrate. Most of these offer online classes of some kind.

Examples are: Central Michigan University (my school) Michigan State,
Penn State, Wake Forest, Auburn, Southern Cal, Washington State.
Literally 100s in this group of schools.

Finally you have schools that are purely online. My example here
is Pheonix University. They have a Business Department and offer a
number of degree programs.

Of the ones you list in your post.

I would consider Boston over Colorado States and both over Pheonix.
Boston is right at the top edge of the mid range group mention...not an elite but very good. CSU likely above average. My school....honestly I would rate average.

The other foreign schools, you mention I don't know enough to give comment on.

Walk with a doctrate from a elite, you are looking at a starting figure of $100+K. Walk with a doctrate from a mid range...really depends on how well it school is known in the field of employment that you are in.
Each of these mid ranges school have different school in Business that
are known well and less known.

My suggestion...talk to some employers of interest...ask them what schools they find work best for them. Many have close connections to academia. They are sponsoring researching and porgrams at the schools.

Lastly there is a directories of our 4 year colleges that most of our libraries carry in the reference section. It will break down degree programs by the school and gives a ranking to the school. Next time I am in the library, I will get a name for you for the directory. Post it here for you.

Hope it helps...good luck with it.

Glad YOU said that! I am also part of this (brain drain)! I lived over 10 Y in South Africa (Durban) and I left in 2000. The system is going down since 1994, but no reports about that because it is not in the media's interest. Every 22 seconds a woman get raped, every 5 minutes a car gets hijacked, every week 7 policemen gets shot .. wanna hear more? And Jhb has got the highest crime rate of all.

And Uni-reputation?rolling on the floor laughing At the Jhb medical university 60% of the students failed, so they started toi-toi-ing (special Ghosa way of demonstrating - sort of dancing and screeming). So they dropped their requirements until 80% of them where able to pass!

My advice: Don't even think of it!

Hi Tom

Thank you very much for the info and any futher help will be highly appreciated.

See Vido's comments in this thread, that is in short a summary of what is happening here in South Africa, and all of it is unfortunately true.

I need to qualify myself properly and get out of here.

Vido

I can't complain myself about money. I work for an Australian company here in SA that is paying well and partly own a security company. So I guess I am 1 of only a few that can say crime pays (more crime better security industry is doing). But 1 always live in fear. Damn even my dogs are scared to bark at someone passing my house. In Johannesburg the dogs are walking in pairs in the streets, too scared to walk alone. grin

I am also out of here as soon I can.

Thanks, Frik

Hi, I was a student @ CWRU until I ran out of money. I did workstudy in the BioMed Engineering Dept. One of my jobs was to help process Graduate Applications.

Make sure you find out what all the Graduate Entrance requirements are. What scores you need on your GRE's, Your grade point, be able to write in English USA style (there are slight differences that can totally mess up what you are saying if you don't write properly.)

Contact the department you wish to enroll in and present everything to that Department's Dean as well as the Graduate Dean of Admissions. The purpose is there will be someone able to tell you what to brush up on,etc.

Many Universities offer Proficiency Exams to boost "Sub Par or Substandard Credentials. Check it out.

ASK, ASK,ASK, Everything you can think of to the College you intend to enroll in. Can't stress that enough! There is no such thing as a Stupid Question only Unasked Questions

Best of luck to you! My turn is coming.
