MySpace Suicide Case Leads To Tougher Laws

-By Michael Todd-

After the troubling suicide commited by a Missouri teenager due to an Internet related incident, state lawmakers voted and gave final approval yesterday to a bill which will deal with cyber-harassment.

The bill is expected to cover several aspects of the new wave of technology, identifying as illegal the harassment from computers, text messages and many other electronic devices, besides the well known written and telephone communications.

Republican Governor Matt Blunt, who will soon sign the final version of the bill, issued a statement saying that the social networking sites and technology have provided criminals with a whole new set of weapons against their victims and the new protections and penalties are highly needed in order to ensure a safer environment for everyone.

Lori Drew, 49, was indicted on Thursday by a Los Angeles grand jury for her alleged role in an online hoax that led to the suicide of her 13-year-old neighbour Megan Meier of Dardenne Prairie back in 2006.

Lori Drew was accused of creating a fake MySpace identity under the name of “Josh Evans”, a 16 year old boy, making friends and later harassing Megan not long before she committed suicide.

On October 15, 2006, the so-called 16 year-old teenager Josh Evans turned against Megan, sending her negative comments, and ending with a harsh message: “The world would be a better place without you.” According to a police report, Megan later hanged herself in her bedroom closet.

Under the current state laws, the maximum possible penalty that Lori Drew can receive is of twenty years in prison.Do you think there should be tougher laws when it comes to cyber-space harassment?????

Personally I agree with tougher laws....annonymity has protected these kinds of people for long enough and I think they need to be held accountable for their actions.....

I believe that the laws should be tougher ....... but I have to wonder how they would enforce them. Truly this is an example of a sick adult preying upon a vulnerable child. Teenage years can be "total hell" for some kids and they're not always the most pleasant of kids to be around; but no one deserves to be subjected to this type of treatment. She obviously had an extreme dislike for this child - I have to wonder what would have happened to her perceptions if she'd have befriended her instead.

"There needs to be accountability for ones actions...." quoted from H&K

Last week the EU announced the formation of a 'super' HQ to fight Internet criminal activities of all sorts be it personal or corporate and covering all EU government departments and the military. The idea seems to be modeled somewhat on what reminds me of Tom Clancy's Net Force. The HQ will be in Lithuania and will monitor all of the Internet comms in the EU. The reasons for the location is because of the massive damages done by the irate Russians when a Soviet Statue was removed .
However the targets will be both on local levels as well as intra European for all people. Safeguards already exist to a great degree in the various treaties that define the EU, so very few are objecting.
Many types of psychological abuses are already defined as criminal, consequently very few new laws will actually be needed, as the net is already monitored by several agencies as in the US. Some States have laws to hold psychological abusers accountable for any crime fitting in that category. Some prosecute, some don't, just like everything else...upholding and enforcing the laws are just not 'economically viable' and people are being left with a growing lack of law and order...

Massive damages to all Internet traffic and destruction of computer storage systems that affected all of Europe. Just to clarify why the EU has chosen Lithuania.
