Saw this story & thought I would pass it along

This lady has changed her habit of how she lists her names on her mobile phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell phone, credit card, wallet... etc...was stolen. Twenty minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says 'I received your text asking about our Pin number and I replied a little while ago.' When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text 'hubby' in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.

Moral of the lesson: Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mom, etc..... And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back. Also, when you're getting a text by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back
to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them, be very careful about going places to meet 'family and friends' who text you.

I never thought about THAT! As of right now, I no longer have
'home' named on my cell phone.

Another issue to remember....

Don't put too much information out on web posts.

Things like your birthplace, date of birth, children's names.

ANYONE can see what we type here!

I've known people, teens mostly who put all of their personal info in the details section of ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo messengers. After talking to them about it, they remove everything but first name.

Some are quite surprised when I come up with a street address if it's not included in their details. All that's needed is full name, town and state.

Myself, if someone got all my info and came looking me up with mischief in mind will be greeted quite warmly with a 16ga grin

It is indeede sad that that criminal was intelegent enough to get that information but uses its intelegence to rob someone.

On the other side of things, friends of ours lost a cell phone in Houston last week. It was turned in to the cashier at the cafe' where it was found and she looked through the numbers and dialed mine with it. After talking with my lovely wife and verifying that it was his number, I called the cafe' back while Jackson called the place they were staying.

Long and short of it was that they got their phone back with a minimum of fuss and bother - He thought he'd lost it on the plane and never expected to see it again!

thumbs up

My phone has a lock program , I have not figured out how to use it but I would not be surprised if most cell phones have that feature.
