One of Freud's key findings was that much behavior is driven directly from the subconscious mind. This has the alarming consequence that we are largely unable to control our behavior, and in particular that which we would sometimes prefer to avoid.

More recent research has shown that the subconscious mind is probably even more in charge of our actions than even Freud had realized.

Discuss.

Yeah I think there is something in that..

I know for me.. I am more often ruled by my dopey subconscious than my smarter conscious. I have had to learn to MAKE it take a back seat sometimes.

I think there may be some validity to his findings. I am constantly making Freudian slips. While just the other day, I bumped into the ex and said "how are you" when I really meant to say " you fricking cow, you ruined my life. I think your new boyfriend is gay". sticking out tongue

But even the painting of himself and the failure of cocaine as an stimulating agent to see reality (or what we call it like that) shows that his demise is alive in many others. There is always some kind of truth behind what he described or thought about the human mind.

I love to quote my old psychology professor when I see Freud's name...

"Freud the fraud!" rolling on the floor laughing

Freud was a very confused individual. He had some decent theories but many of them lacked in their foundation.

He went from Stages of Development or Psychosexual Development to Theory of Dreams to Id, Ego, Superego to Defense Mechanisms to Anxieties.

Many of his theories and psychoanalytic testings were based on himself. hmmm He was just a little self obsessed wouldn't you say!?!

grin

Yes, he was consumed by his ego, as anyone else is. Everyone is in more or less degree a creature that thinks he/she is the bloody centre of the world.
His theories are very confusing too though I still find them more stimualting than a boring and barren scheme of "psychological evidence" processed with some stupid statistical tests.

We landed on the moon?
Our subconscious controls much more than you would think it does. The key it to be aware of this and to work out any problems from your past that control your daily life.
Dreams are a good way of decoding what is really bothering us...I'll add more later when I am off the phone....

That's only partly true....the subconscious is comepletely programmable. So it's not as though we are slaves to it.
