I remember some navy kids doing what Claire suggested when I lived in Hawaii. They couldn't afford to purchase a horse (let alone the cost to ship it from the mainland & back when they got transferred) so they leased a horse for the time that they were there....didn't have to purchase the horse, but paid for the priviledge of taking care of it, riding when they wanted, and entering shows. The price you charge them could cover the cost of boarding and maybe work out 1/2 the cost of feed too.
