How do you feel about a prospective employer doing drug testing, psychological testing, and/or making you take a lie detector test as part of the screening and hiring process for a job?

Which jobs is it absolutely necessary for? Which never?

How about finger printing teachers and others who work with children? Is that kind of testing OK?

How far can/should employers go when they are screening and hiring employees?

For my last job we were police checked, which was a good thing but even then some undesirables still got thro, maybe depends no the nature of the work as to how far it should go

Personally I wouldn't mind. I have nothing to hide, so I wouldn't be all that bothered. A lot of jobs in AU now run Criminal records checks as part of the application for the position.

You were working with disabled and/or elderly people?

That seems to me a good idea....unfortunately in this day and age, people working with a vulnerable population should be police checked.....although it doesn't keep every bad egg out...

Thanks for the post. Can always count on you Morgan...wave thumbs up hug

I don't have a problem with it. I've been drug tested at several companies and I was fingerprinted to work in a casino.

Would you be offended giving a urine sample or taking a lie detector or personality test? Even if it was just an office job or a sales position?

Not at all. If I applied for the positon and that is what is required I don't have a problem with it.

Mind you urine, and lie dectectors for some office positions and a sales positions seems to be getting a little bit carried away.

I work for a comapny that provides services for the Government. We had to go through extensive back ground checks, drug screening, financial checks to ensure we were not a t risk for stealing from the government......

I think as a result of working for the past 20 years for the same company also indicates my stability.....

Did you feel any of this testing was an invasion or privacy...? Or unfair or unncessary....? For example, looking at your financial history...just because you don't manage money well, it doesn't mean you are gonna steal from your employer...

In Australia it is stated on the Job application form and selection crietria what will be carried out when applying for the position.

Criminal records checks, drug tests etc.

I see it easily as if you don't want to go through all that don't apply for the position.dunno

Well some of it I believe is unneccessary. However with the kids we have in the work force today and what they get away with.....unfortunately has created the way employers screen things today.....They believe that the screening prevents a more costly outcome later, if someone is a bad apple....

Any testing that a prospective employer feels is desirable is perfectly in their right to do. No one is making anyone go to work for them. The prospective employee has no rights until they're hired. They are not doing the company a favor by wanting to work for them, it's the other way around.

The kids ( meaning younger work force) applying for basic jobs like data entry positions-------more than half can't pass a drug test.... and most of them are indebt up to their ears..... And all it takes is one to try and take things like computers....other equipemtn to ruin the hireing process for all.....

Don't get me wrong.... not saying they are all like this...... we all make choices but then you need to live with those choices...
