Yes, you are absolutely right. I do think, though, that some people, who are really individualistic, create careers for themselves that allow them to be their own bosses...if they are talented, skilled and smart enough they can do it...and if they are willing to take the chance on being broke or whatever.... For example, instead of teaching ESLfor big international companies, I could try my luck at traveling around the world just working with individuals...but that would limit my income, my security, my health care benefits, and the countries in which I could find employment...so I don't want those risks and put up with working for a boss.

But, I am in the same boat as you...I can't tell the boss to shove it...it doesnt' mean I am not my own person. Totally respect what you are saying. But I still admire people who can do the other!!thumbs up

I don't have a problem with any kind of testing as long as it fits the employment type. For example, aircraft maintenace, pilots, bus drivers would seem to require drug testing while extensive background investigations and drugs testing would seem appropriate for those working with or around children. Along with criminal checks on people working with or handling money or high value items

I think employers are under a great deal of stress to not only protect their business' but to protect themselves from lawsuits should an employee do something illegal. While this may seem to encroach on other's rights to privacy, I believe we need to keep in mind the employer's/owner's rights to protect themselves and their business'

All very god points...and well said.thumbs up

This story seems to fit here

My ex girlfriend was a manager at a local truck stop. She took some applications and ended up hiring this 20 year old guy who after working there 2 weeks decided it would be fun to make himself out 15 $500.00 money orders and disapear.

Come to find out he was just realeased from prison 2 months prior to getting the job

of course the money orders were canceled but it just goes to show how hard it is to trust anyone these days

Some people are in a position also Portiea where they can say to their employer shove it !!!Other like me at times are a single parent and still have to put food on the table and pay bills. So a lot of the time you have to shut your mouth and just soldier on.

I never told him to shove it. I worked for him for almost two years after that. I still had bills to pay, just like everyone else, but don't like people pulling the holier than thou attitude.
I also worked for a guy last year that was a total asshole, but I made a commitment to do a project. Even though it dragged on for 4 months longer than it was supposed to and I had lost all respect for him, not to mention wanting to club him with a 2x4 some days, I still finished the job.

You are obviously both your own person and very hardworking and ethical. I do get irritated with people who say they just walked away from a job because of this or that....first, I can never do that because I have to support myself...but also, your point is well taken: if you make a committment to someone, whether it is an employer or someone else, it is a good person who honors that committment.thumbs up

Yep...me too. People do travel around the world giving private ESL lessons...but it is a very precarious existence...and you can't do it in Europe...has to be Asia or Africa or such...I have thought about it...but now I see myself building a career, a future...cheers

Where your girlfriend works...I suppose any job where people handle money..probably have to do criminal history checks...but a young person my have criminal tendancies and hasn't been caught yet. I also think ethics are not what they used to be...in general..cheers

all perspective employees should be drug tested!!Unless you are applying for a job where there is no thinking involved. When you find that job, you don't need to be drug tested! Just get a good campaign manager and run for public office.

Bur seriously....all should be tested for drugs and have a background check. JMO, of course

PSS Alchohol is a drug!!

If they were testing only for drugs other than pot or alcohol, I wouldn't have any problem with that.

What a person does on their time off is not the employers business.
