I honestly believe that Hospice is one of the most wonderful organizations there is. Those people are truly incredible.

You are so right! Before I was placed in their care, I had no understanding of what Hospice really did. I thought they just watched over you till you died. I can't begin to tell you of the wonderful things they did for me and with me!! If I was a believer, I's say God Bless them all!!

Being a caregiver is something I've tried to get away from many times in my life, but somehow I always find my way back. I'm currently working as Dietary Manager in a nursing home, and it's probably one of the more fulfilling jobs I've ever had. But I know what's it like, looking around and knowing that death has kind of taken up permanent residence in a place. We deal with it all the time, and I pray I never "get used" to it.

It gives you a sense of your mortality and the inevitability of aging. But you can either let that fear get into your head, or you can let that knowledge make you live every day to it's absolute fullest. If we know it's going to end someday, then live every one of them like it's your last.

I am and have been a care giver in a nursing home for a long time now, I have had my chances to have better paying jobs, better benifits, Even for a less hectic and less stressfull job. I turned them all down and will continue to turn the ofers down. I love my job! It's tough work and you go thru so many emotions. And there are a lot of times you will ask your self why am I doing this. The answer is simple! They need you, and they love you! No thanks or credit needs to be given. I get mine every day at work, And I will give you an example of how.
I had been taking care of an elderly lady who was contracted, and never spoke, she never responded to anyone asking her questions nothing. I would go in everyday, do my job and talk to her as if she was responding. One day I went in, did the same thing as always, I turned my back for a min. and she started to sing you are my sunshine. I looked at her could not believe what I was hearing. I said to her OMG your singing! she gave a half smile and said I Love you. Things like this happen everyday, That is the only thanks I need. And that is why I do it and will continue to do it.

That is such a lovely example... I know what you mean, they do need you and love you, they don't ever have to say it because you can just feel it.

I am a caregiver to a 96 year old man, for the past year and a half. He is pretty independent, just needs me because of a failing memory. And I tell you, he gives me as much as I give him. I love sitting around listening to all the history he, and his friends have lived through. At this point I am like one of the family. So yes I am attached. I think one of his saddest remarks has been, the problem with getting this old is,all your friends die on you. I think my most important job is, staying positive and keeping his spirits up.

Just started my 48 hour shift... When she sleeps I'm here

Just wondering if there are any other Caregivers out there.

It's a tough job, being a student I've been through a lot of jobs and this one is by far the toughest. I take care of an elderly woman at her home in the country. She has no family except for us 3 caregivers, it's sad. It's kind of given me a whole new perspective on life and also on getting old. I kind of fear getting old now. I don't want to ever end up old and alone with someone doing absolutely everything for me. I only hope that if it comes to that I will find people as good as us 3 ladies to care for me.

I salute all the caregivers out there, thank god there are good people taking care of the ones we love when we are gone.

Sorry you can't sleep!! I know how ya feel. My sleeping habits are all out of whack. I have to get up about every hour and a half all night long, (to help her to the restroom and what not) and whenever I have a day off I can never sleep the full night. It's kind of like what your body does to you when you have a newborn!

Hope you get some sleep, have a cup of tea!

Yep me too, I`m looking after my father (90yo) and my mother (88yo).
It was easy in the early days (7 years ago) but as senility set in the task is almost too much to bear.

I have worked in a nursing home in the past and loved it. Loved the stories they would tell of their lifes, but so sad when anyone passed away.

I've recently applied for a job as a personal assistant to help support adults with learning disabilities within their own homes. Fingers crossed I'll get an interview and the job!

Yeah the lady I care for has dementia (sp?) It's hard when they start slipping and forget so much. It must be even harder caring for a parent, I can't imagine!

I think the most hurtful thing is seeing your folks deteriorate to the point of not having any dignity left..I regularly have to help mom on and off the toilet and that is not exactly the image that I would like to remember her by. Plus you can`t switch off like going home because you are already there 24/7.
