I think the most hurtful thing is seeing your folks deteriorate to the point of not having any dignity left..I regularly have to help mom on and off the toilet and that is not exactly the image that I would like to remember her by. Plus you can`t switch off like going home because you are already there 24/7.

Boy, I don't know what to say, that would be so hard! I commend you, you must be a very loving caring person. A lot of people would just send them away somewhere for someone else to care for. Just remember how happy you are making them by being there with them, even if they can't express it.

I'm a nurse, I've worked in neonatal ICU for past 20 years. I am thankful for people like you that can care for the older pt. I don't think I ever could.

Yep I have to keep reminding myself that they, especially mom, has reached the stage in her mental awareness,ie lack of, that thank yous are not part of her thinking and even though she does`nt express it , it is still appreciated. Notice I disappeared for a while..she called.

Anyone who knows me on here knows I have a severely handicapped 19 year old son.

I have cared for him at home for the last 19 years.

Not all caregivers are in the "industry".

I agree, caregivers is a term that means exactly that... You don't have to be in the "industry" to care and take care of people.

I took care of my grandpater for many a year. Now that its all over, although at times it was very trying, I wouldn't trade a minute of it.

We know who we are via where we have been. I wouldn't know about my family, or a lot of its history, if I had not invested the time in this old man.

Children are the future, but our elders are the repositories of wisdom.

God grant I am as wise at 80.
