Manson Follower Susan Atkins Being Considered For Release

CORONA -- State corrections officials are considering a request by former Charles Manson follower and convicted murderer Susan Atkins to be released from prison because of an undisclosed terminal illness.

Atkins' initial request for "compassionate release" consideration was made last month after a doctor determined that she had less than six months to live, said Terry Thornton, spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

It is unclear if Atkins, 59, made the request or if it was made on her behalf by a doctor or family member.

Citing medical confidentiality laws, Thornton said she could not disclose the nature of the illness. But sources close to the case said that Atkins had suffered from brain cancer and had undergone amputation of one of her legs.

Atkins has been in state prison 37 years, longer than any other female inmate in California, Thornton said. She is serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole, making her eligible for release.

Atkins and other members of Manson's cult were convicted of killing actress Sharon Tate and six other people during a bloody rampage in the Los Angeles area over two nights in 1969.

Tate, the wife of director Roman Polanski, was 8 1/2 months pregnant when she was killed at her hilltop home in Benedict Canyon.

Atkins was also convicted of the earlier killing of music teacher Gary Hinman.

Her request for release has already been approved by the California Institution for Women in Corona, where she was housed from April 1971 until March, when she was transferred to a local hospital for treatment.

Officials at the Corona facility concluded that Atkins should be considered for release because of her failing health and because she no longer posed a risk to others.

Several obstacles remain, however. Her bid for release must still be approved by officials at the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Thornton said.

A positive recommendation would send her case to the state Board of Parole, which would conduct an investigation and issue its own findings, she said. That hearing could include public comment.

Vincent Bugliosi, who prosecuted Atkins, said she deserved the death penalty in 1971. But the former prosecutor said he believed now that Atkins has sincerely renounced Manson and that her 37 years in prison, along with her illness, changed things.

"She has paid substantially, though not completely, for her horrendous crimes. Paying completely would mean imposing the death penalty," Bugliosi said. "But given that she has six months to live, and the loss of her leg, I don't have an objection to her being released."

Last month, sheriff's deputies and forensic experts began searching for buried human remains at a sun-scorched ranch in Inyo County once used as a hangout by the Manson family. For decades, rumors have persisted that graves existed at the ranch.

Investigators used ground-penetrating radar, magnetometers and shovels at the Barker Ranch but did not find any human remains. They did find a .38-caliber bullet casing, but it was unclear whether it was related to Manson.

What do you think?? Should she be released?? Sharon Tate & the others that were murdered were not shown any compassion.

I may "fry" very mad for my opinion, but it's what's in my heartheart beating

I would like for her to have her remaining days to be lived in quiet freedom as she resolves her brief future. Perhaps she will take whatever time she has left and do something to give back to those whom she devestated so many years ago. She can't bring back their loved ones, but perhaps forgiveness can be granted and everyone then can be "free."angel

I hope I was able to explain this well enough for all to understandconversing

Peachesteddy bear

If it were my family who were murdered so horribly, I would like the opportunity to forgive the person face-to-face to free both our spirits. Forgiveness, I believes gives as much or even more to the forgiver than it does to the forgiven.hug I do believe it would have taken me many many years to have forgiven this woman and her co-erts of their haneous crime, but I hope I could have by now come to forgiveness in my heartheart beating

I think she should die in prison. The people she killed certainly weren't free their last moments on this earth.

The only thing that should be able to release her from that prison is her death.

If you look back at the methods used during the murders, it might affect your compassion for this "person"......... Terminal illnesses have been known to be misdiagnosed....... I wish I could have compassion for her, but I am afraid that in retrospect to the heartless brutal manner in which these people lost their lives, her case file should be collecting dust in the "closed" bin............

drinking WWJD? It clearly states in the Bible, an eye for an eye. I don't want to get involved in any deep discussions on religious beliefs. Maybe He would have given her a test upon releasing her from prison, and if she failed, she turned into a rock or something. We do not have that power. All we can do is protect the innocent the best way we know how. Let her rot in prison.

hug What you referred to is Old Testament. The Jesus that Chriatianity embraces is New Testament! Jesus enplains during his sermon on the mount, that to speak poorly of your brother is the same as murder!!! Should all die for that! An eye for an eye is based on OT law. The Jesus that Christians follow had fulfilled the law.

What I am saying is that for those who claim to be Christian, they should follow the example of the person they say they follow!!

So...WWJD????

Now for the rest of us....let her die in prison!!cheers

I follow my Father's laws as best as I can. My Brother's ways I can comprehend to a certain extent. There are many books of the Bible that have not surfaced, so it is unknown as to what his whole life consisted of. Being a Christian means that you believe Jesus to be the Son of God. That's the basic understanding of it. God is still the Father. Old Testament, New Testament, doesn't matter. An eye for an eye...there is a time for everything....I've already answered your question on WWJD in my last post.

You think your opinion is questionable????

I think Manson, himself should be released from Prison!! I think he should spend the rest of his days im a phyche ward, and not released to the public! But, I don't believe he was ever convicted of actually killing anyone!! If I am wrong about his conviction....then I will change my opinion of his release

For Vincent Bugliosi, the lead prosecutor in the Manson case, the question was gut-wrenching. After all, he said, he successfully sought the death penalty for Atkins.

Atkins’ death sentence should have been carried out, the former prosecutor said. But the state Supreme Court commuted death sentences to life terms in 1971.

Compassion? Did she show compassion? She could never ever pay for the crime she committed. Her sickness is even too nice for her. She caused families lives to be ruined. She was judge and jury for innocent life. Her soul burning in hell will still not be enough. Compassion? She must be kidding. I hope she rots in hell. Just because time has past makes no difference.
