Civility-A lost art?

Posted: Jun 16, 2008, 4:05 PM CST
I am constantly amazed at the bickering that goes on online. This is not specific to this site, but concerns every site where forums and/or chat are available to the members.

The ability to agree to disagree in a civil fashion without resorting to ad hominem attacks seems to be in decline. I'm not pointing fingers at anyone or antything specific, for those who want to rush out and find examples to refute my generalization, just making an observation.

I am wondering.

Is civility a lost or dying art, and if so, what does that imply for the future of civilization?

Any thoughts?

A lot of people are angry with life and lack inner harmony. It's that simple......

I agree these are most likely contributing factors, but I think there is more to it than that.

What starts as a minor disagreement between friends rapidly escalates into a major melodrama pulling numerous third-hand people into the fray, many of which misunderstand the nature of the underlying argument, but who, with incomplete information, feel entitled to make ad hominem attacks of their own.

It's like a snowball effect. I'm concerned that a trend like this in online relations might affect global relations.

Great thread GB...

Civility IS an art on life support. And there are so many factors that has caused this.

I want to thank my mom for teaching me manners, and how to treat people.

The above quote was my attempt at passive-agressiveness in answering why we have lost civility....laugh

I think some people feel the need to be martyrs and jump into the middle of things that are really none of their business....and what they do is end up making things worse.....thumbs up

So, in general, can accountability be laid at the feet of those who raised us (or didn't raise us, as the case may be?). I find this an interesting idea, because I was raised to treat others as I wish to be treated.

Moreover, I have seen a decline in respect in today's youth. I'm glad I don't have kids, because I don't have the time to teach them respect, and the TV never does...

Like you said, there just doesn't seem to be time to teach kids how to respect one another. And the entertainment industry is the epitome of bad manners and disrespect.

I am not trying to lay blame on anyone. It is how civilization has evolved the last 40 years. So many factors account for this....

Accontablility lies with us.....and I live the same way...by the golden rule...something I was never taught growing up rather developed on my own....once we become adults....we are the only ones responsible for our behaviour not anyone else....everyone has a bad day...but some people consistently lack civility and chalk it up to entitlement of their opinion etc etc...which is true...but tact and diplomacy go a long way!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here here about the lack of respect of the kids of today. I see it everytime I take my vehicle out of the bus yard to pick up kids. I am glad to drop these off because they seem to test the limits of what they can get away with.

I was taught to give everyone respect because that is what I would want. Who has time to argue? But, we all are human and this is what makes the world go round. Some people hide behind their computers because you don't know them and just get after the ones who will. Sad state of affairs, but true.

Well, I'm sure some of us learn things the hard way, but that wasn't my point hugs.

I think you get more flies with honey than you do with vinegar, and your attitude is key in convincing anyone of anything. If you come of as superior and condescending, most people either just stop listening or aggressively go on the offensive.

This is what I mean by civility. It seems everyone knows everything about everything, and no amount of discussion will change the fact that they're an authority and you're not.

What gets me is that if I'm discussing something, I check my facts before I post. I'd feel rather stupid if I said a leopard had stripes and tigers have spots, only to have someone post a wikipedia link proving what an idiot I am...

Yes exactly....I agree...I either already know a lot about the subject by experience...or I will check facts...and I don't post in threads where I know nothing about the subject because I have nothing to offer....but some people just have to be right no matter what and will argue with you that the sky is black when it's blue...and like I say....tact and dilomacy go a long way in a discussion or debate!!!!!!!!!

If you don't have the time to teach kids respect then I'm glad you don't have kids too. It comes with the territory. Kids have to be taught everything from an early age. And shown by example. TV is a form of entertainment, not much of a teaching tool. I think thats a lot of the problems we have here with kids; the parents are so busy trying to make a living or making ends meet that they don't spend the time needed to know and supervise their kids
