If you had the choice, which type of schooling would you choose for your children / grandchildren?

My daughter's plans are to homeschool their children someday. (No grandchildren yet, yeah...it's still too early_) Her father did not support the idea when I presented it 20+ years ago. Now I wish I had followed my convictions. He did not make himself available to assist with their education too much, so it was left up to me anyway.

I remember reading about several from back then who went to jail in support of their convictions to homeschool.

If your daughter would like any info let me know and I'll give you my email addy. I can recommend all of the best books to read. There are some that I read every year, some years just to get me back in the right frame of mind. But they have really excellent and helpful info. Besides, I'm an old pro. We're going on our 7th year of homeschooling. I even did my first year, with some help from mom, while working full time, driving 2 hours a day, and with some major health problems. laugh But we made it and Em was happier.

Also, 20 years ago, I don't know about where you lived, I was in AL, public schools weren't so bad. Now there are a lot more things to worry about.

But there are some areas in this country that have truly excellent public schools.

I do think other countries often have much better public school systems than the US.

I would like to know how it is, and get some opinions from some people from other parts of the globe.

Let me see now. I drive a 40 foot school bus everyday filled with kids who have no respect for authority and where they fit in.They hate people telling them anything they should be doing, especially middle school. Oh yea, and instead of doing creative things on the bus, like homework, they are playing video games or smoking weed or other society ills. So homeschooled or otherwise? With what I see, homeschooled children really want to be good citizens and can fit in most anywhere. I am sure private schools offer good things, but my exposure has been to public and homeschool and I will take homeschool hands down.

I went to private schools and the standard of education was better, the classes were smaller so individual attention was easier

That's what I liked about Em's private school too. In fact, she struggled because of her ADD, and one of the teachers actually took the time after school to work with Em one on one. (Em also stayed for after school care there).

These 2 teachers at that private school helped me make the decision to homeschool Em. They really had her best interests at heart and that meant a lot to me.

My nieces also went to private school and received an excellent education! It was a really good school. One of the best in the Nashville area. They decided on private school after a kid brought a gun and was passing it around Tiffanys class. Tiff was 12 at the time. My brother went to the school the next morning expecting to stand in line with parents 100 deep, and was the ONLY parent that showed up as a result of that incident.

I went to public school until 9th grade. Then my parents decided that the school system was failing and put me in private school. I hated it at first, but mainly because I never did like snobs (and there were plenty). But I have to admit they did me a favor. I think the biggest advantage private schools have is the ability to throw kids out when they are "trouble." Public schools don't have that option as a rule. Right now, my kids are in public school - elementary - and we are extremely impressed with it. But I will probably take them out during the teen years just to keep them alive....

That statement right there about says it all on public schools in the US, doesn't it?

PS I've met a lot of kids who were homeschooled and found they were extremely well-rounded and intelligent. Really impressive, also. I just don't have the "fortitude" for the job!

YEah. It's very sad. The worst thing is that in terms of national averages here in the US, we actually spend MORE money per child on public school education that the average private school tuition.

And we want to government to handle health care now??????

yes! When they go into the real world, they need to prepared for dealing with real people. Mommy and daddy won't be there to protect them and shield them from all the bad things in the world.

Guess what...people cuss and say bad words in the real world.

People fight and argue in the real world

People do drugs in the real world

People talk about or engage in sex in the real world

Prayer doesn't always solve things in the real world.

The pages of some holy book won't protect them in a real world

there are people of different color, nationalities, religions, and sexual oprientations in the real world

They will meet all these people...and find out they are not the villians they were taught about in private school.

My experience has been, that most people who put their children in private school were racist.

Public schoopl prepares children to take their part in a very public arena.

JMO, of course

OK I can understand that kind of logic, but would just add one thing as food for thought... Don't you think that people who are "out of control," and who routinely disrupt the classroom are preventing the others from getting the most out of their education. And what about the bullies who wait for you after class to "kick your butt." I don't have to deal with them in real life... Not arguing, just would like to see the problem solved

I went to a private, catholic school, for my primary education. I later joined a hell hole, for my secondary education. I learnt a lot from both.

I still have time, to decided where my 'future' children go to. Maybe you could home-school them for me, Dana!

people will disrupt your lfe and make it rough for you in the real world, you must be prepared to deal with it.

There are bullies waiting to beat you up, whether with their fist or with a fountain pen...prepare for it in public school

JMO, of course

Of course there are bullies everywhere, but nowhere are they as prevalent as public high school. In the work environment, you don't see "employees" roaming the halls in packs and terrorizing everyone else. If they did, they would get fired.... So... If you really want to prepare kids for adulthood, teach these kids that if they act out, they lose their jobs! I absolutely agree with you that everyone should learn to be "streetwise," but teenagers haven't yet developed the skills or self-confidence to deal with these things. Education is what helps you develop those skills. Too many critical developmental things are happening during the teenage years. Tolerating outrageous behavior only perpetuates the problem.

But on the flip side, I think public schools do an EXCELLENT job in elementary education. There was a recent article in the New York Times reporting that the United States typically scores HIGHER than others in the elementary years. But by Middle School we fall well below all other countries. Something clearly is wrong and I think it's that we have tied their hands.
