Okay there is an on-going problem in the United States today....

DID YOU KNOW: That in some states Waiters/Waitresses make only $2.13 per
hour???

DID YOU KNOW: That as a waiter/waitress whether or not we get to eat
depends solely on what we make in tips???

DID YOU KNOW: At most chain restaurants ie... TGI Fridays, Applebees, Joe's
Crab Shack, etc. etc. etc. They have a thing called (tip-share) which is
mandatory? Some places as high as 5% goes out to bussers, hosts,
bartenders? [that may not seem like much but do the math... $100.00 dollar
check, and you tip $5.... 5% of 100 is $5 We see no money on that tip )= ]

DID YOU KNOW: The government taxes us not only on our tips, but our sales
as well... [Out of that $5 that we gave away on tip share, we owe the
government an average of $8]

DID YOU KNOW: We waiters/waitresses are people too! We have feelings,
wants, desires, hopes, dreams.....

DID YOU KNOW: over 90% of American waiters/waitresses have declared bankruptcy???

I am a waiter! I have been for over a decade now! Why do I put myself into
such a stressful situation as dealing with people in such a demeaning
manor? It's all I know how to do... I made bad decisios in my life that
leaves me with this choice of professions.

We waiters/waitresses NEED your help!!!!!

20% of your bill BEFORE coupons is considered an okay tip.

20%! That really isn't much if you look at it do the math! $20 is 20% of a
$100.00 check.

I think its time the hardworking class of americans should ban together and
make a stand!

If you're a server and have been gettin crappy tips that are less than
expected shout it out!

If you're a server and have been mistreated as a human-being scream it
out!!

Kids tell your parents when you are out to eat tip 20% of your bill,
despite the service you receive, we gotta make a living too. We have rent,
kids to feed, bills to pay, not all of us live at home with mommy and daddy

I always tip the server…

"Get a haircut"
"Tuck your shirt in"
"Stand up straight"
"Asking me if I want another drink is the dumbest question in the world, no wonder you're in the service industry"

You know, a job is a job.

And most people with any class will tip 20% for adequate service.

I tell you the lady here is on a "kick butt" role this morning...wink Joanie, you're right if a person has to do what it takes to better themselves..but I have waitressed, in my more youthful years, and this man's "right on the money" people usually do not tip properly even for great service. I understand minimal tipping with buffet meals, only refilling the drink glasses, but sit down meals should receive the proper tip is the service was good.

Gettting out of here...got lots to do..driving for tour bus this evening down to Camp Lejune with some soldiersyay

yes you are righjt
all hard working people shuld gather toghether
and make the goverment have tha same rules for every workier

income tax on the real income, not on what the IRS wants

minimum wage means minimum wage, and also should be paid by restaurants, restaurants owners shuld not relay on tips to pay they workers

but it takes all the PEOPLE to claim for justice for it to happen

What a joke! Every now and then this same old thread starts up again.
Yes, I have worked for a server before.

First of all, screw whatever wage they get, since I was living off the tips not the check, because I did a good job.
Some of those high priced restaurants charge the wait staff to even be able to work there, because the tips are so HIGH. This is where true professional servers work.
Bottom line, no, you do not HAVE to tip.
IF you are a server and depending on those tips, give good enough service to EARN them, do not EXPECT them.
If that is a problem for you, get another job.

Something you wrote doesn't make sense to me.

"Some places as high as 5% goes out to bussers, hosts,
bartenders? [that may not seem like much but do the math... $100.00 dollar check, and you tip $5.00, 5% of 100 is $5 We see no money on that tip)"
Are you saying tip share (a basically good idea) is a percentage of the bill and not a percentage of the tip? If so, this makes ZERO sense! It CAN'T be true!!! If the bill $100.00 with a 5% tip share and you only get a $4.00 tip that would mean YOU have to pay the bussers bartenders etc. $1.00 from your own pocket. That is just absurd!

I think the owner of the establishment should pay the staff sufficiently so that the whole concept of tipping can be eliminated completely. He/she can adjust prices to reflect this new scheme. Sound crazy? Think again. I would definately patronize a good restaurant that banned tipping. The whole concept of tipping is onerous to me. Why should I be required to pay somebody for doing their job? Their employer is already paying them.

I have cards that I pass out."If the service was better, the tip would be bigger". And I leave it when it is appropriate!!

People in the service arena, have forgotten the basic tenent of customer service....courtesy!

I could write volumes on the piss-poor attitudes of wait staff.

A smile would be nice. Quit bitching about your job to other employees, when customers are present! If you don't like your job, quit!

Some wait staff are wonderful, but as in everything else, the bad make it worse for the good.

What happened to the phrase" The customer is always right?"

You are not required to tip. However what the poster is saying is industry wide. Servers do not even make minimum wage unless a patron tips. Tip sharing is mandatory in restaurants.

TIP for the Patrons:

Tipping is NOT a city in China!

I worked many years as a server and the general public is cruel to servers. If I get real bad service I do leave less tip, however I know what they go through and how hard they really do work and I am a good tipper.

To ALL servers, especially those who complain about how much their customers tip

YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW

Yeah, do a better job and the tips will increase, look to the cause and not the result. Lazy people even think that doing the barest minimum should be rewarded, and then complain when they are not praised as much as THEY think they should be, which is just plain stupid. No, your sucky attitude will not get you better tips.

As far as adding on to the price of the meal to cover all of this, that would put a lot of places out of business, and I have always resented places that automatically added the gratuity to the bill, and cross it off and readjust to what I think it should be before signing off. Over the years I have noticed that many of the servers in places that do that slack off on their performance due to this bogus sense of entitlement. Food costs more and the staff is rude, you go out of business quicker. Let those servers do their job.
Bussers get paid by servers because it is basically part of a servers job to bus their own tables, and having someone else there to do it frees the server up to cover more tables, and make more tips overall. Same kind of delegation as in any business pretty much.

In these days of high fuel costs, there are many people who give up dining out because they have to save their money for gas. If I save up enough to go out to eat once a month, you can be sure that I won't be eating $100 worth of food. I could fill up my tank almost two times for that amount of money and go to work all month. If I give a tip of 20% on a $100 meal, that means almost a half tank of gas. My point being, I usually eat at home or fast food places were I don't have to tip and then I can buy gas. Sorry guys, everyone is tightening their belts so how about being gracious and be happy with whatever you get. I know you work hard and take a lot of crap, but so do a lot of people...sigh

Trublu, I wasn't suggesting the gratuity be automatically added to the bill. That is an arogant thing for a restaurant to do and like you, I wouldn't dine at such a place. What I'm saying is businesses that exist to sell cooked food to the public should be run just like any other business. Pure and simple! If I could, I would gladly go to the kitchen and dish out my own food but other customers might not care for that so wait people are a necessary part of the business. Same with taxi's and door men and elevator operators and a lot of other businesses in the service sector. I'm in the service sector myself and I can count the number of times I've gotten a tip on 1 hand. I'm a truck driver and if I don't make enough money for making a delivery, I turn it down. I don't rely on making ends meet from tips.

hmmmm

well i have lived in and traveled thru states in the US that the culture doesnt even include tips and i think its really awful
oddly in these states the state minimum wage doesnt apply and they presume the servers make above minimum wage
crappy

and the IRS has come into the picture a few years ago-they figure your tips and tax you for em-based on basically no actual information

where i lived in northern AZ and most rural areas in the midwest
that arent on a tourist highway-tipping is really low just an offhanded gesture or non existent??

i find it shocking

tip sharing is bogus imo except in a busy bar-then the bartender and barbacks always get tipped out but not always mandatory

but still service does count --but not always,
many people are set in their ways regarding gratuities

its something i really notice about a guy when on a date w/ him...

shamrock shamrock laugh
sorry
this IS something that gets under my skin-this subject dunno
