As smoking has been shown to be harmful to health. the main health effect is that it causes lung cancer. research now shows that even people who don't smoke themselves are in danger of developping cancer when theu are regularly exposed to the smoke of people who do. besides, the danger of cancer, nonsmokers also complain that a smoky environment makes them suffer from a variety of illness including sore eyes, headaches, and even asthmatic symptoms.
we should be cautious about banning smoking in all public spaces. if public space means all areas outside of private homes, then i don't agree with a ban . such a measure is an infringement of a basic right of enjoyment. but, in places where smoking is nuisance to nonsmokers, itshould be banned completely. such as rairoad carriages, buses and restaurants but not in city streets and open-air places. Let's talk!!!

Smoking is banned in ALL public buildings here in the UK and in Ireland too, buses and trains are included too. You cant even smoke in your own home if you have workmen in building or repairing something...

But smoking outdoors is ok but you cant smoke withim 30 yards of a school

is it just me who thinks non smokers are always quick to point the finger at those who do smoke? surely exhaust smoke and fumes are far more harmful than the odd whiff of someone elses ciggy but it's ok for the non smoker to jump in their 4x4 (no, i'm not suggesting every non smoker has a 4x4) and spew their toxins into the atmosphere. am i alone in thinking the smoker gets a pretty raw deal?

I beg to differ...Second hands kills...its our right to complain, whether smokers like it or not...

I smoked b4 and i know it was bad and killing others when they breathe the smoke in...

Why do smokers always attack the non-smokers with their opinions???

Double Standard....

As a smoker i hate being told that i can't smoke somewhere, but i never smoke in someone's house, or in there company if they find it offensive , Also annoys me that drinkers are never penalized, when that also causes health problems, can effect families, and causes crime, drunken behaviour, uses police time and resources .

you're right there are double standards - on the non smokers part. on one hand they complain about small amounts of smoke exhaled by smokers but they think it's ok to drive big cars and pollute the atmosphere with fumes far more dangerous than cigarette smoke. you stop driving and i'll stop smoking. deal?

I smoke.

But I agree to smoking being banned in public closed situations, i.e buildings, bars, restaurant, buses and so on. Those with closed environment.

However, I also suggest that irrespective of all this, there should also be placed such as bars that are clearly designated as smoking. Anybody who doesn't smoke, stay off.

There are so many chemicals, gasses, toxants, in everything we touch and consume in any major city, that it is stupif to highlight only the damage done by cigarrettes smoke as the culprit for the damage being incurred byu the human system.

Can someone really believe that in any major city like London for example, cancer is being caused solely by cigarrette smoking?

see this is what i just can't seem to grasp. people would rather i stopped smoking than stopped DRIVING even though my car pollutes the air more. btw, yes, i will stop smoking eventually but right now i don't believe my smoking (which is mostly done alone or outside) is causing ANYONE any harm.
