As smoking has been shown to be harmful to health. the main health effect is that it causes lung cancer. research now shows that even people who don't smoke themselves are in danger of developping cancer when theu are regularly exposed to the smoke of people who do. besides, the danger of cancer, nonsmokers also complain that a smoky environment makes them suffer from a variety of illness including sore eyes, headaches, and even asthmatic symptoms.
we should be cautious about banning smoking in all public spaces. if public space means all areas outside of private homes, then i don't agree with a ban . such a measure is an infringement of a basic right of enjoyment. but, in places where smoking is nuisance to nonsmokers, itshould be banned completely. such as rairoad carriages, buses and restaurants but not in city streets and open-air places. Let's talk!!!

Yes, I agree. The state of washington banned smoking in bars, restaurants. If you want to smoke you have to do it within I belive 50 feet from any establishment.

I am not against the smokers either, just the smokes.

When I was working in a hospital they had a non smoking room and a smoking room, most of the people I know went to the smoking room so I did too. I got asked to leave since they said I was taking room for the smokers and since I did not smoke I did not belong there.

What gets me is alcohol is more dangerous and the cause of more crimes than having a smoke .

i mean you dont see me having 1 too many smokes and getting in to a fight or ending up in jail for the weekend .you dont hear in the papers "man killed by smoking driver"

sort out the priorities and get a ban on alcohol first then target the smokers .

The point is more direct or indirect risk..... smoking is a direct risk to others because of the biproducts of smoke..... Alcohol is not a direct risk, it is indirect.... If I take a drink it does not directly affect you.....
It could indirectly affect you as a consequence of my actions after I have taken too much alcohol..... but directly it has not consequence to you at all.....

Banning alcohol would only create the same type of black market enterprises that existed during prohibition..... where some moonshiners produced alcohol that was lethal when drunk, people died..... just like drugs they would go underground, because like it are not, you will never stop people from drinking.....

And what about all the responsible wine drinkers out there who enjoy the "art" of drinking wine especially with fine cuisine...... it is not about getting drunk...... you would have to ban all that too.....sigh

I totally get not smoking around those that don't. It's a stupid habit, but it's my stupid habit. It should not be inflicted upon others.

Funny, one of my biggest critics is a woman that drinks herself to oblivion on a regular basis. I don't drink, thus the voluntary inhaling of carcinogens is my vice to bare...

with all respect...you can hardly expect people to cater to everyones allergies

I would not expect people to run their lives around another person's allergies or health issues, but to walk up to someone with asthma and for fun, do things like blow the smoke in their face or do things that will set off reactions is not right.

If smoking is not allowed in a building, would it not be nicer for both sides of the issue, for a smoking area of 2 be set up? Preferably not at an entrance ALL parties concerned, enter the building... example the main entrance would be smoke free?

At work there is a scent free washroom. It means no perfume or hair spray... etc. Some have complained about it being set up this way, but it's one washroom out of 5... you'd be suprised how great a relief it is for the ones that need to avoid if possible things that will set off asthma attacks etc.

On the bus this young lady sprayed her perfume on her self and her friends. A mother with a child around 4 yrs old ask her to stop. The young lady did not like this, and sprayed the perfume in the direction of the mother and child, and thought it was funny.

The child went into a full blown asthma attack. Bus driver stopped the bus, and helped the mother, and got help to come take the child and mother to the ER.

If a person wants to smoke, and goes to a place they can smoke, non smokers should avoid that place. If the non smoker goes where the smokers are, and complains... that is not right.

Common sense, if anyone has it, should know, if a person is allergic to smoke, don't smoke where it's going to agitate, and vise a versa, if allergic, don't go where you know the smokers are.
