How do we know what is morally right?

How do we know what is morally right? Does it change from culture to culture? Does it change from era to era? Are there universal moral rights and wrongs? Is morality based on religious doctrine? Can each individual have their own set of morals?

It is morally wrong to intentionally hurt someone else or to hurt yourself. That is how I look at it. If what you do is going to hurt someone mentally, physically, spiritually, etc. than you shouldn't do it.

Most of our moral and ethical tenets were set by philosophers like plato and aristotole and subsequent great thinkers, and later adopted by churches and governments to set standards of control for the masses.

Even though I'm not a religious person, I've always found that I live my best moral life by doing unto others as I would have them do unto me - NOT as they have done unto me. If someone has a problem with me - it is just that - their problem, they own it. I feel that lowering my own standards would be a betrayal to myself.

Now back to the questions....LOL....Of course I think morals have changed from era to era - as times change, technology advances, we become anesthesized to the diminishing of morals. It's in evidence all around us - we have all experienced, no need to be specific. I do believe that there are universal moral rights and wrongs - of course - killing, stealing, lying, cheating are WRONG - but what I think has changed is people's attitudes - less black and white and more "grey" area in their thinking when it comes to what is wrong and what is right. These are just my opinions - feel free to disagree - grin

If any action is looked at with the results noted and a larger number of results are bad or good for the person or group then it can be morally set as good or bad. All things have a use and an abuse varying from one end of a scale to the other. It is the risk of abuse to the use that would makes a morality or immorality of such an action.

,For a doctor to see a naked woman in his office can be a moral problem...but with a nurse present, then even with an obsence mind conditons would keep it moral except in the mind of the doctor unless the nurse is lesbian, then morals would be wrong in both the doctor and nurse.

A moral person would keep themselves pure from as many things or actions that would make for a harmful situation for themselves or the group their actions would affect or alter.

Most morals are for the betterment of the user....except where such morals are set up for the sake of control and manipulation.

The results are where morality is, as judged by a sound mind of experience.

I think we can only know what is morally right for us....Obviously things like laws of a particular society reflect moral values...but personal values and morals stem from what we believe to be right or wrong....some may believe that infidelity is morally wrong while others explain it away and still others practice having more than one spouse in the name of religion!!!!!!!!!

Morally is a complex issue affected by society, religion and the individual.

Basically, it's doing what those around you are doing. A person may feel it is wrong to steal. But when they see other employees getting away with petty theft, they slowly start helping themselves, also.

My biggest pet peeve about situational ethics is driving!

People know that you should obey the law. People know laws are there to protect others. Butr these laws only apply to others.

How many run red lights, don't come to a complete stop at stop signs, or drive over the speed limit??

Situational ethics!
