Around the world, some 26,500 children die every day.

That is equivalent to:

1 child dying every 3 seconds
18 children dying every minute
A 2004 Asian Tsunami occurring every week
An Iraq-scale death toll every 15–36 days
Almost 10 million children dying every year
Some 60 million children dying between 2000 and 2006
The silent killers are poverty, hunger, easily preventable diseases and illnesses, and other related causes. In spite of the scale of this daily/ongoing catastrophe, it rarely manages to achieve, much less sustain, prime-time, headline coverage.

Thanks Class.

Awareness can not hurt the dying children.

Will the "willfully ignorant", PLEASE, drop the cell phone and take a long, deep look into your mirror!

Hard to name a single cause, but, the Global Corperate Greed Machine and their/our trade policies come to mind.

As well as thoseof US who contribute to this problem by simply:

REFUSING TO CARE! crying

You're right of course and there are lots of attrocious happenings in the world .
Take the ongoing catastrophe which is centred in Zimbabwe or the wars being
waged across the globe. Greed seems to figure widely in many many events.

As Bill Hicks commented, if we took the money spent on waging wars ( ie profit to
the incrowd) and spent it on food for the starving and water for the dying etc we
could clear the world of those problems .....

How about those people who have hoarded billions and millions of dollars. Maybe we need to get some money from them. I don't know how people think it's fair for any one to have that much money. Money was created a solve a simple trade problem. But it has caused this amazing asymmetry in people. For instance regular people like us go to good schools and all, and then get happy to make $100K or more per year. We pay so many taxes. Most of the tax money actually comes from Payroll. As you might suspect the bonuses and other perks of rich ones are not taxed. Also from 1998-2006 many Corporations did NOT pay their due taxes, and never got prosecuted. But when you and me cannot afford to pay $1200 or so, we will be in so much trouble. What a world.

Thanks Trish, and today's news on Forbes. The wealthy just monarchs increased their total wealth from 95 to 131 billion in past year. This is just the monarchs I am talking about. The top 2% of richest people increased their share of total wealth to more than 60%, while remaining 98% fought for less than 40%. Actually this is very underestimated. It might be up to 70-75%.

As the rich people become richer they become even more distant and ignorant to the suffering of the poor, the people who have the capacity and resources to eliminate poverty and save lives choose not to as a result of their own greed.

I really hate to burst your naivety bubbles that you seek comfort in, but try and look at it from the other-side's viewpoint,(this 'incrowd') the ones that die of starvation, tortures and wars are regarded as mere garbage; the flotsam of the planet's disposable population that given the present birth rates globally, easily re-supply the numbers of disposed. The 'replacements', 'cogs' or whatever adjective you wish to ennoble the masses that feed the various 'incrowds' with all their profits are going to be used, abused and continually disposed of for the cheapest prices available. Until that mindset is confronted head-on, nothing will change for the better. At some point it must and perhaps with a good deal of bloodletting until a more just and equitable formula can finally (if ever) be worked out in that mankind as a whole accepts responsibility for Mankind and of our one and only Planet; no, we or 'they' aren't going to run off anytime soon for another world, with the exception of death...
Which is worse...the money concept for using it, amassing it at the costs of human lives or the mentality that regards the vast human population of Earth as their slaves to use, abuse and dispose off when and how they see fit? Drastic changes are needed now and are all too long overdue to rectify this never ending scenario....

Not downplaying this travesty..... it should be noted, however, that the figure represented and supported in equivalencies, is but a mere 400th of one percent of the total world population.... and that is something that needs consideration as well!

I think the death of any child is sad...regardless!!! (let me inject that) At some point people need to figure out how children are produced, though.

I gave one child the best care I could today.

He's no longer a child, but he is not capable of taking care of himself.

We all should do the best we can sad flower

I wonder what you can do if someone is dropping 1 ton bombs next to your house, or shooting heavy artillery near your house in order to get some bad guys. I probably think you would not be able to provide the best care you can then. How about living in a place where for no fault of yours there is no food and you cannot feed your children. Or how about your child got a small disease and you cannot even find the basic medical care.
