The first thing that comes to mind is the idle is too low because it drops to curb idle.... the run idle has a problem. There is either a diaphram type damper busted or your solenoid is shorted or loose or bad connection. These hold you in run idle and drops to curb idle when cutting off your engine.

When you crank the car without touching the pedal (if your car will) it should idle very slow.....then if you touch the pedal it will idle higher even when you take your foot off again. This is so when you cut off the car it will not deisel(i know it is gas car) or run away. This is when gas fires without a spark from the plugs. It goes on trying to run after your cut of the car.

To check: Crank car and lift your foot off the pedal.....if the car dies or when turning the key to off the pedal should do a little bump up. If it don't bump......it needs attention.

Get you a manual on your car and fix it......you can do it.

Look under curb idle.....if you wiggle your little pedel you will find where it goes at the carberator inder the hood.......or wiggle something else and get some guy to do it for you.wink

Follow these instructions carefully, it's guaranteed to work...

1. Get in car, pull gear shifter into neutral.
2. Push car to nearest Mazda dealer.
3. If dealer is far, get some friends to help push.
4. Caress steering wheel for last time.
5. Quiet salesman who is pissed off about the junker in the middle of his lot by telling him you're buying a new MAZDA2
6. Buy new MAZDA2 (we don't have them here, but I hear lots of good things).
7. Tell your stateside Mazda Product Guy all about the car.

No need to thank me, it's my pleasure....

The inability to idle has nothing to do with the overall shape of the engine/transmission (assuming it runs when gas is applied). It has to do with gas not getting to the engine sufficiently in idle. A simple idle adjustment would most likely fix that.

You don't seriously mean it was "out" of oil and water, do you, Claire? You probably mean "low." If it were literally out, the engine wouldn't run for more than a few minutes at most without overheating and locking up.

every car is different, but I had 3 cars that did just that, the first one was the o2 senssor, one was the head gasket, but with that when I started the car I got some white smoke from exaust. and the thrid was the fuel pump.

mechanics will find as much wrong as they can and sometimes make some things up.

could also be something as simple as just a bad fuel filter or water in the gas- fixed by adding a $1 bottle of iso heet to the gas?

But at a shop I think they might charge you $400 per bottleprofessor

Sounds like the IAIC may be faulty (Idlel Air Intake Control) If it is it should set a dtc code (check engine lite will be on) depending on the year

car is 6 years old? not sure about there but here there is a crapload of electronics in cars any small part could be doing that to you. is there a service engine or check engine light on? if so could be EGR. if fuel injected the most likely thing is eather the throtal positon sensor, or the mass air flow sensor/ fuel air mixture sensor, needlees to say it sounds more like an electronic than a micanical thing. though just a guess.
