I don't think I'd want to be in a relationship where lying was obligatory. However, there are better or worse ways to convey your opinion - for example, being loving and affectionate and attempting to emphasize the positive in the above case ("It may not be the most flattering dress, honey, but you still look great").

In most cases , I have found that being truthful, scares men. They take for granted that all women lie about something, especially themselves.We also ask too many questions, and want to know their background.Some women get too serious, too quickly.

Its being tactful. Some clothes will make a person look more attractive then others and personally I'd rather have a guy tell me the truth then to lie. If I look fat in something - tell me its not very flattering.

One thing working in the clothing store - women are not always the best judge of what looks good on them - so give your first impression. Wow or hhm ... not that great - lets try something else.

Im not long home and havent had a chance to read all through but it seems to me that if we suspect we look fat in something, suspect it enough to actually ask anothers opinion, then why the heck not just change into something else anyway and have done with the bother - it must be pretty tricky for a guy being asked this question cos at the end of the day, relationships are about love and sparing each other from the hurts of everyday existence - so it seems to me that asking a question that we already know the answer to is a bit of a none starter and a pretty sticky wicket for a bloke to come up with an honest reply to, that isnt going to end up causing hurt or upset....... perhaps I have just been on my own too long but its what I think that counts - if I feel fat then I simply dont wear that item

conversely however, I think its cute when your partner is actually interested enough to say that particular outfits 'really suit' you - I think this whole issue can get really out of hand and I think can possibly even be used as a tool to start arguing...........

One of my biggest fears with men is an inability to express themselves without going off the deep end constantly. Ive only had chance to have a quick scan through the thread Metalartist but have spotted that all of your replies have an element of anger - I suggest a couple of chill pills or something may help as, if you post angry stuff then by my reckoning, you are going to get angry reactions - as I said, Ive only had a quick scan through and could have the wrong end of the stick...........

That was pretty much my reaction. It wasn't what was said, it was the way it was said. I actually agree with the fat thing, it's just dumb for women to do that. Didn't quite understand the anger in subsequent posts. Someone has some issues maybe?

UM , one of the many reasons men need to have a woman is because we need someone to say ' your wearing that?' Ask a mans advice and you will get 'don't wear undies'. I would certainly think twice before telling a woman that she did not look flatering unless it was hidious beyond reason. Sure women may not be the best judge , how dose that leave men being in the equasion?
