Look at the quality of some of the posts out there. The intellectuals are easy to spot. Sadly, so are the others...

There's no shortage of bright intelligent witty people. The problem is all those who are fit bodied have run out the door to have meaningful liveslaugh

Those of us that are left are either unable to move fast enough to catch a pizza delivery guy or cant work out how to open the front door to get away from our computers.

In my case i'm just out of hospital but as soon as my little legs will carry me out to the big outside world i'll be there like a rat up a drainpipelaugh

I think one of the problems, certainly here in the UK, but I 'm guessing elsewhere too, is that in general, our societies distrust intelectuals, and glorify people who revel in ignorance. You just have to look at the "Big Brother" T.V. programme to get an idea of what I mean laugh . I know it always get used as an example, but it is such a good one.

I think the upshot of this is that people in general shy away from expressing their thoughts on things in the public sphere, but have their little groups to do it. There is no shame in saying I don't know, in fact I think it is usually the most intelligent thing to say, as long as it isn't with a sneer..wink

Does anyone have an idea why we as a culture are like this?...is it because our culture feels failed by the intelectuals, lets face it, we all know where the enlightenment took us, to the 2nd world war, and the battle of the big ideologies, or is it just the obvious conclusion of the hedonism given to us by the 60's?.....

or......am I already seeing your eyes glaze, and the thought forming in your mind that I am being pretensious and boring....?...laugh wink

Your reaching too far ahead.I'll make it far more concise and easy to digest for the hard of thought.

Most of the public are as thick as pig shite, sadly.

I think maybe it's just part of our new, superficial, throw-away society. At least in the 60's and 70's you had people who would smoke a little dope and philosophize all night long. It might not have been a perfect scenario, but at least people THOUGHT about things instead of just going out and buying happiness.

Good point, I agree about the throw away society, and the idea that we are consumers not citizens any more, consumers don't have to think, just consume..wink So do you think this is because liberaism (little l), democracy and capitlaism won the big fight?...it seems to me that everyone seems to see these 3 things as the same now.....

I think that the most valid question/answer to this and many similar rhetorical enquiries has to be:

"Would you recognise what you are looking for if you saw it staring at you?"

Oh your making the mistake that people who enjoy Big Brother as an interesting socialogical experiment are actually human.

There not. After all how can you explain to me seriously how someone like Jade Goody can make a career out of being a thick common ignorant slapper?

If you can rationally explain this and how people used to buy newpapers with articles about her and even buy products she endorsed i would be amazed.

Would you want to deliberately smell like an ignorant smelly common monster?

It just proves the majority of the population is brain dead.

Everyone to their own I suppose. I just found it full of intellectuals, even met one or two. Nice people and you can get specific about what you want, if you are looking for something in particular. It suits some people who really know what they are looking for I suppose and have definite scenarios in mind. I kinda like the mixed pot myself. Intellectualism is over-rated I think. A sharp mind doesn't always come with a doctorate.wine

A free thinking mind and an open one is always the most interesting. You don't even need an education to have a mind like this, but a little helps!

" Smoke dope and philosophize all night" Who? (Boy, does that bring back memories!
But I think your right, we're constantly bombarded by advertisements for "things" as if owning them is the only way to be happy. People don't spend enough time using the grey matter! My god, half the kids can't do multiplication without a calculator!!
As far as this thread, take a look at how many people are on the site. Take a look at how many post! Lots of bashful people out there! I'm sure there are many people with high intellect that just don't feel compelled to post on the threads. ( And, with some of the anger/name calling I've seen on here, don't know that I blame them!)
