thanks for all your replies and comments :-))
intellectualism is seen differently in different parts of the world. i'm quite aware it's a terrible sin for a brit intellectual to identify himself/herself as such....what a shame!!!
and, i don't think anyone with a PhD is better than any illiterate person sweeping the streets, but why on earth would intellectuals have to hide and be reluctant to express their opinions on things, only n o t to be considered stuck-up??
who is setting the standards here????
who do you go to when you have legal problems or a toothache, if not to professionals, who are intellectuals, after all?
personally, as a croatian english teacher and somebody who holds an MA in english and russian lit and linguistics (those are just facts of life i'm not throwing into anyone's face to make myself sound more important), i'm sorry that the culture and heritage i love so much ( the brit one) has in these past few decades been putting wrong people on the pedestal.....c'mon!!
i'm trying to teach croatian teenagers that winston churchill is far, far more important than some shallow victoria beckham character or whoever and whatever is a current fad....
don't tell me intellectuals don't matter!..as far as i know, german would probably be spoken now all across the isles if it hadn't been for an intellectual like him......
