don't dish it out if you can't take it... I love it when someone tries to make an insulting comment and when it comes back around and bites them in the ass...

deal with it.. you're ignorant on the subject of military ops and warfare.. ...and you're almost 50 and bitter.

Hello All,

I am considering and in fact have a great opportunity to go and work in either Afghanistan or Iraq late this fall after my retirement is settled. It would be working for an NGO and be geared towards reconstruction. I've been to both countries before and am painfully aware of the dangers but there's a part of me that really feels driven to do this. Would any of you go?

I used to want to go back to work for oil companies. Not so much, these days. They paid badly sent me to school and paid well, another time. I read about a guy who was kidnapped for months. I would lose it forever, if I were kidnapped. I barely remain rational these days. Knowing my luck, I would be taken off the bat. That would be the last straw. Best to try to avoid that, for my mental health.

Military ops has nothing to do with working overseas. I wouldn't work in Africa or Iraq. They don't pay enough and it's too dangerous. My age is hardly a consideration and I've lived through too much. Maybe enough to be sensible and scared. I've you've come close to dying, you recognize danger. Doesn't make you old, or a coward. Just means you have experience and wisdom.

You wanna be a macho swinging dick, go right ahead. By the way, you're less than 50, not bitter, dependent on military and pretty stupid. Please take the job in Iraq! Let us know what happens!

I've only known one guy who wanted to go back to Iraq.

You're a big mouth and I'll bet you've never been there. Please make the trip!

I wouldn't work for oil either. And I'm not too hip on beng kidnapped. But I look at it as there is risk in everything. Still deciding...

Thanks for your comments Patrick. I've never considered my self any braver than anyone else. I have been there and been as scared and appalled as anyone else. Still weighing and deciding.

Wow what a decision to make, since you asked for input I hope you don mind my 2 cents worth. I'm only able to speak from the perspective of the person who needs to make a difference in this life and maybe a bit from the gypsy spirit I have but here goes.

There is the comfortable safe path in front of you but you don't seem to want that right now. There is the job with risk but it is what seems to be pulling you. Now I wouldn't go there but it is not my path. Maybe it would help you to make 2 lists to clarify what you will do. One would be reasons for staying here one would be reasons for going. One list should outweigh the other and it might help you see which one speaks to your heart the most.

For every fork in the road one always seems more the right one despite all evidence to the contrary.

Best of luck in your decision and thank you for looking for input.here's to you

Funny isn't it when there's a thread asking for advice, somehow even on a sensible thread like this somehow someone can manage to pick a fight and then get abusive.

If this isn't reason enough to question why on earth you are here and whats your motivation for being here i don't know what will.

I think its pretty sad and pathetic and a pretty accurate reflection why some people cant get some self respect and dignity and not display this type of behavior.

It's low, really low.
