Rove ignores subpoena, refuses to testify

WASHINGTON - Former White House adviser Karl Rove defied a congressional subpoena to testify Thursday about allegations of political pressure at the Justice Department, including whether he tried to influence the prosecution of a former Democratic governor of Alabama.

Rep. Linda Sanchez, chairman of the House subcommittee that called Rove, ruled with backing from fellow Democrats on the panel that Rove's claim of immunity was invalid - perhaps the first step toward holding him in contempt for refusing to cooperate.

The House already has voted to hold two of President Bush's confidants in contempt for failing to cooperate with its inquiry into whether the administration fired federal prosecutors for political reasons.

The case, involving White House chief of staff Josh Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers, is now in court. The White House maintains that its staffers' internal communications are confidential.

This infurriates me!!! As far as I am concerned, No one in this country is Above the Law, especially those in political and staff positions!!! Their behavior should be exceptional, an example of integrity, as role models as being the very best Americans! They should be held accountable for all they do or do not do, as leaders of this Republic Nation.

All of the secrecy going on in this Administration is wrong! If you think you can be passive and blow it off by saying, they will be out of office soon so we don't have to worry about it, I am here to tell you that you are a person with stinkin thinkin!!! Have you not heard of prescedence? Once they start saying they are exempt from the laws of the land, they will continue. Don't you know that those who have positions in the House of Representatives are exempt from the laws of the land already? This was brought to the public eye years ago when certain members were bouncing checks! They write their own laws, giving them immunity and they write their own paychecks and give themselves raises!!! Our country is being run by a bunch of CROOKS while people lazily sit by and say, "There's nothing we can do about it".

Well, I hope to God that the cases which are before Congress will bring forth JUSTICE to the fullest extent of the Law, and that the President will not be able to pardon the crooks! He should serve time with the rest of them! This is Organized Crime at the Highest level! Wake up people and see what is going on! Support Congress and send emails voicing your agreement with the action they are taking on these cases and DEMAND that JUSTICE be carried out and served!

Are you as appauled as I am? Do you even give a rat's a$$? HL

Under the Patriot Act, the Courts no longer have any power over the Executive Branch...and the Legislative Branch just writes laws, they don't interpret them. This leads to a catch-22 wherein, indeed, the President and his affiliates are indeed ABOVE THE LAW...

Welcome to the fine, fascist world of post 9/11 America. D'oh!

Congress will do nothing. We voted out the republicans, expecting change, and got nothing. Today this congress that we voted in, passed the Bush surveillence law. Why did we elect democrats who are going to support republican causes?? This is why I have no faith in O'Bama...a democrat sure, till he gets to the white house. It will continue to be status quo.

Rove is safe and so is everyone else connected with Nixon...I mean Bush!!

I came back to this thread to post this, and Shippy has already brought it into the conversation:

WASHINGTON - President George W. Bush signed a bill Thursday that overhauls rules about government eavesdropping and grants immunity to telecommunications companies that helped the United States spy on Americans in suspected terrorist cases.

He called it "landmark legislation that is vital to the security of our people."

There's that IMMUNITY word again... makes one suspicious, doesn't it!?

As for O'Bama, he has already conformed to the republican agenda, just days after receiving the democratic position, concerning foreign policy. Just exactly the point I made months before, concering the thinkers of the "think tank", that they already have the plans made and are ready to hand them over to the next President.

Fascism is very much alive and well in the U.S. and many other places around the world.

I'm sure somewhere in that 800 plus page "Patriot Act".

It passed in unheard of record time. Surely there is something within that "Act" that allows government officials to refuse without fear of reprisals or prosecution any and all manners of summons and subpeonas.

Yes welcome the Patriot act. Embrace you who do or hope to serve at any presidents pleasure....despite your party affiliation this bill that passed with out so much as being debated in the legislative or judicial branches of our government. this "Act" is never gonna be recalled or deemed unconstitutional.

this "Patriot Act" is still yet to totally unfurl its colors of corruption and latent demise of the U.S. Constitution.

And those in or soon to be or will one day be in the white house especially will love every nuance of it.

You ask for justice well the patriot Act has rescinded that right for All Americans..the scary thing is....its designed to take effect in small "inconvenient" bites at the heels and livelihoods of all Americans
