hmm ... its not exactly a patriotic streak ..

ok .. We gained Independence in 1947 .. since partition .. initially the growth was good .. but gradually as India opened upto the outside world .. corruption creeped in .. its that which spoils the growth ... slackens it ..

Like look at China ( the other fastest growing economy ).. the ways of the govt. are radical .. they need a dam built , everything in the way of the project as in land wise is cleared ... theres no option.

In India , the same thing takes a very long time cos of Humanitarian concern and being a democracy the govt. cant do radical change for any good reason. Hence the growth potential is ruled by too many factors .Plus the population factor.

Most importantly , when we started after partition , we were not as rich as we used to be as a nation. After all the Invasions ( ghazni , tughlaq ) andnot to forget the British Raj , most of our wealth was taken either plundered or stolen .. so we started from a level lower than our original.

While Pakistan hasnt really changed much since partition so i have heard.

So there is a definite resemblence but compared to Pak. , India has come a long way since partition.

WE didnt grow cos of nehruvian socialism, wrong strategy, we fed the license raj...cause of corruption. We r thankful to the british for giving us institutions of democracy like our independent judiciary, election commision, etc. How many privately owned world class companies can u name from china........ when democracy gonna come to china ..n it will sooner than later ...do u think a country like china would handle it.Look at pakistan its almost a failed state.India has shown remarkable resilience and growth in tough times.

Riya,

I have pictures of India, taken by my ex. It shows the home where her now husband lived. He made only 150 dollars a month and has a masters in finance. I saw his apartment. No refridgerator, no toilet, no running water. He slept on the floor. No stove....used a hot plate.

I call this poverty!!

Good Lord that is poor conditions !!!

I am surprised and am even more affirmed on the theory about him ( that i have ) Ship.

The incomes are not comparable to the US incomes cos even the cost of living is not the same.

But he lived in an appartment with no toilet and on the floor ????... impossible .. unless he lived in some remote area .. even then a toilet and bed are 100% provided. And Hyderabad is one of the posh cities in southern India. i simply dont believe it ( theres something fishy ... sorry Ship .) .. cos i have travelled a lot within the country .. from Hyderabad to even remote places in Rajasthan where u actually can see such conditions ( no bathroom etc ) but Hyd. , not possible.

uhh read what i posted .. i was trying to explain in concise how we have come so far .. it doesnt cover everything though.

And the British Raj did do good as it did otherwise.I spoke only of the wealth that was gone.

We are talking of similar things .. but different aspects. sigh

why no one has mentioned spirituality or culture !!!!1

I will dare to touch on this one a bit...

I had the pleasure of meeting a beautiful young woman about 2 months ago. She goes to one of the universities here. Spiritually speaking, she follows one of the most ancient belief systems in India - Vedanta. I do know that spirituality is the "life center" of India's culture. From what I understand most believe in a combination of religion and philosophy. Many of the jewelry items that are worn by the women are worn in order to protect them from unwanted harm and/or dark spirits.

Riya, i was refering more to the cultural differences
between India and the west. This is what smacks
travellers full on in the face when they arrive in
India. I think Pakistan has a similar effect, maybe
even more so.

And mf, how could i like the French....I'm EnglishD'oh!
