Working in the hospitality industry I have many opportunities to meet folks from all over the world. One of the things I like best about my job.

I recently chatted with several families from England and the UK. What we find rather pricey in the US, these families found very inexpensive. We americans complain about our gas prices being $4.00/gallon and the family from England said their gas is $15.00/gallon.

I also notice in the forums there seem to be more get togethers overseas, where a bit of traveling is involved than in the US.

My question is how do you manage with costs being much higher? Are the wages much higher than the US?

Here wages in the hospitality industry work out at about $13 per hour minimum wage for even the worst jobs. Our waiting staff get paid minimum wage and get tips as well.

The average person earns 3 or 4 times that on other sectors.

Most people own their own homes.

Travel is very inexpensive. It can be as low as $25-$50 to fly from here to rome or paris or barcelona or any of the main european cities.

We are an agricultural island so we dont have huge transport costs for everyday produce like veg and dairy products or meat. We have large supermarket chains that provide the rest here in Ireland but are only allowed to operate here provided they use a certain percentage of local produce too so it keeps prices down.

Social welfare paments are $300 per adult per week and maternity medical, hospital costs, dentist, eye tests etc are free for the less well off.

Public transport is free too to older people and disabled people.

Social life pubs, clubs and eating out are affordable.

no poeple in north america ,go the bigger the better way of life always have always will, they have to feel bigger and better than others most of the time whether we think it or not it is the fact, poeple back home do with less and travel less, families licve near each other not thousands of miles apart.
the family unit in general stays together in europe not in north america.
that is the fault of north american society in whole, now because prices are going up poeple just see it more in there wallet.

This is true I just did the calculator conversion thingy. British people pay more and sterling is not worth as much as it used to be so they pay more.

Plus a US gallon is more than UK gallon (1 gall US = 0.832 gall UK) so the OP,s estimate of $15 is about right applause

here in England where we are covered by the welfare state, if you are unemployed you receive about £57 a week which is about $113

Also recieve a maternity grant for baby stuff of £500 thats almost a $1000,

what airline is gingerb about though as I have never seen flights that cheapcheering

we can also travel from one end of the country (John O'Groats) to the other (Lands End) in a day cheering

Also main course in a good restaurant is about 15-25 dollars

Clothing is very inexpensive.

The government subsidises school books and uniforms and travel to schools.

If you are unemployed you get an allowance of $300 a week to go back to college plus grants of up to $12,000 per year to help with transport, books, research etc and are allowed to work the summers to earn extra money.

Secondary schools and colleges get 3 months holidays in the summer too.

Teachers here get paid the summer holidays $60-$100 per hour, and can also earn extra by working the American summer schools etc.
