My lovely ginger tabby is about to give birth any day now. Is her first litter and my first experience with kittens being born. Just wondered if anyone had any advice, I love her to bits and am actually getting anxious about it.

Some years ago when my cat had kittens.. I made her a lovely comfy bed up about a week before)..

When she started to give birth.. she got out.. and scrurried about in the kitchen popping them out all over the place!!

I was running about behind her trying to pick them up.. one by the fridge.. one by the back door... one under the table.. etc.

When she had finished.. (with six of them).. I popped them back in the bed I had made.. she got in and it was all fine. dunno

When my cat Blackie had her kittens, I put her in a bed too but she would not stay there unless I stayed there with her. When I left she would follow me. She ended up having them on the floor, then I did the same as Claire and put them in the bed after where she stayed too. The second time she gave birth in the closet.

It is strange as she did not like me except when she was in labor and then wanted to be with me. After the kittens were born she would bring them down and give one to each of us then go and meow at the door, she even left them with Sandy our male cat once, then when she came back in went and put each one back upstairs again.

There is one thing that one must learn about cats...
they know what to do.
wink

Watch her & you will know when it is time. As it grows closer, she will begin to get vocal, circling & adjusting herself. Labor can last all day... try to keep her in an area that limits where she can hide. You don't want kitty goo in your shoe closet.
laugh

Once the kittens start to come, be ready. She may reject them, even though it's usually for a good reason if she does... (eg, low milk production, something wrong with kittens, something wrong with mommy)
Having kitten milk on hand just in case is a good idea. Supplement mommy's food with plenty of aminos before birth, it helps. Linatone is a good brand to use. You just squirt a little on food.
Keep mommy from going outside. I know it sounds like a "duhhh" comment, especially if she's an indoor kitty, but some cats will make a run for the door. It's nature acting up in them, that's all.

Be patient, have a good vet's number on hand in case you have any serious questions & just let the Cat do her thing. It's best not to get involved with the birthing too much, it may actually cause her to reject the kittens at first. Try t wait to handle any kittens until she's had all of them. Removing them too early may trigger rejection.

Don't worry, she'll do what needs to be done.
Things will be fine.

This happens a lot. More often, cats will look for comfort. When you're squeezing out kittens, comfort is in short supply.
laugh

If you can contain her in a bathroom or empty room, the dropping of passengers wont be too dramatic.
*lol...

Chances are, all will be fine.
(until the kittens begin running free- then you're on your own)
rolling on the floor laughing

Just let your cat do her thing and she will take care of her babies. If she discards one of the kittens that means there is something wrong with the kitten and she can't take care of it anymore. Just do what you nomally do and your cat will do the rest. I hope that helped
