My daughter, just out of college and struggling, broke a tooth yesterday. It needs a crown, $1200.00. She can't afford it, nor can I. I feel so devastated and ashamed, that my life ended up at this situation, where I can't help out my daughter for such a basic need. The best I could do was call the University of Toronto, their dentistry students need people to practice on. They can do the job for half the price.

I'm sure that there are others on this site that share my frustration. I feel so bad.

I believe that the UK has free dentistry. Canada has universal health care (free) but a tooth filling here will cost you up to $200.00. Why ?

Agree with Tina. Leo, we want to be able to do everything for our children, regardless of how old or young they are. We 'can't' do everything. We do the best we can.

Leo, you're as good a person as I know. And the measure of a man is not by his financial status. Okay, maybe around these parts, but in general.

You did good my friend.

Hello Pawswave My girlfriend and I talked about this recently if we had money she could get her teeth fixed.
I could get my daughter and one of my son's teeth fixed, I could use new dentures myself, but its all super costly and painful especially to think about not being able to help any of them.hug comfort

It's the same story in ireland unless you Qualify for a medical card (they are given to disabled people , the elderly and any one on welfare) a crown is not covered by it so if you don’t have the cash you have to get it pulled Some people are taking holidays to places like Thailand to get a load of dental work done for a fraction of the price rolling eyes

Funny how life goes. There was a time when my daughter and I travelled throughout Mexico and Costa Rica for 6 months. Money was not an object, then life suddenly took a left turn, the wrong way on a one way street.

You've got some pretty good advice from these lovely people Paws...
All I wanted to say is I'm sure that your daughter is thankful that you are just there showing her love and caring enough about her needs to do everything you can to make the situation better. Sometimes what we do as parents doesn't always feel good enough... But just having love can mean more than anything. I didn't really have parents growing up as I am sure many others here didn't. I remind myself that everytime there is something I can't give my son... My love speaks volumes. He knows and I know that above anything else is what he remembers at the end of the day.
Okay enough blubbering.
I'm sorry for your frustration comfort hug

Life is so damn tentative; an acquaintance of mine was diagnosed with cancer 16 weeks ago. He has about a week to live . He has 3 children, 8, 9, and 14 years old, and here I am moaning about my daughter's tooth.

You are welcome!! The main thing that comes to my mind a lot is darn if I could win the lottery I could get the dental and health things all took care of for my family and friends. Then of course buying all a house including myself.
Your friend dying is very sad and yes you can't help having your minor problems popping in to thought even with what he is going thru . Especially caring about what his family are going thru. hug So sorry you are going thru all of this too. comfort

I know how you feel dear. I have no health care for myself and my boys. I checked it out. The cheapest I can find is $1800 a month. If I could pay that I could cover the doc bills.

My son broke his foot jumping long jump. It cost $65 just to walk into the doc's office. I owe this lady over $1000 still, and I have been making payments weekly since June.

To make matters worse. My son lost his full ride scholarship to USC because of the break.

So needless to say I know exactly how helpless you feel. I wish you and your daughter all the best. I am sure they will do a good job at the university.
