Of course, here in the UK, it is now against the law to smoke in a public place or a place of work.

There has just been a news feature here reporting that a painter and decorater has been given a £30 on-the-spot fine for lighting up a cigarette in his van, as it was deemed his place of work.

Surely, with his profession, people's homes are his place of work? Not his van?? Like the rest of us, surely his van is just his method of getting to and from those places of work? And what possible harm was it doing to others?

Isn't there someone being murdered somewhere....??
Isn't someone being raped somewhere...?? Or robbed??

Ohhh NOOO... someone is having a fag somewhere!!!! QUICK..... CALL IN THE POLICE!!!
rolling eyes

D'oh!

What the...??!! confused

Is it just me that thinks, all things considered, this is grossly disproportionate? A heavy-handed and graduated erosion of freedom? Overly dictatorial perhaps?

Any thoughts...?? (Whilst we are STILL allowed to have thoughts, that is...).
dunno

Huhh?? confused

Cards.... I realise this is more widespread than just here, and is becoming global. But when Police resources are already stretched in combatting more serious crimes is the best use of our Police??

I shouldn't imagine anyone would be too enamoured if a burglar, rapist or murderer got away because they were fart-arsing around with some fella having a ciggie...??!!
D'oh!

Besides, its ludicrous, I don't believe his van does constitute his "place of work"!!

Good to see ya, my friend!! cheers

I can fully appreciate that public places are more pleasant, in a sense, for not having to spend time in a cloud of smoke, even for smokers. And my place of work is more pleasant, for sure. I can remember when we were still allowed to smoke at work and I prefer how it is now.

But all things proportional, surely?? I have trouble accepting that someone cannot smoke in their van..... I can't see how it harms others, nor how it rates with regard to more serious things in life...?
dunno

I wonder.... is this really designed for the benefit of the public's health or yet another insidious and gradual move towards some form of "oppression" and lesser rights?? Just because those tactics are more overt with some of the less democratic regimes, doesn't mean we aren't subjected also?? Just different strategies...??

dunno
