let the puppy eat...take him outside imm. after eating. let him do his business. Not allowed to play. award the dog for good behavior, bring him in!!

A kennel is a wise investment.

I house trained a puppy I had by taking him outside just after he ate.

When he became old enough to go out himeself I would keep a container of doggie treats by the back door and would give him one whenever he went outside to do his business.

P.S.I would never punish him harshly like yelling or spanking or rubbing his nose in it.

I also TOLD her what I wanted her to do, each time. After a while she tried to pee when I asked her to try, and today (12 years later) she is perfect.

It is a great thing when you are going somewhere in the car and can only make a brief stop.

She will want to explore this new world, but we need to hurry. First I tell her to try no1, she does. And then I ask her to try no2, if she ignores me completely, there is no need. We head back into the car and trip continues.

The “not allowed to play” part is important; they can play after, but not before. Dogs are like kids.

Hi Dan.... wave You and Renee okay then?!! thumbs up Apart from all the weeing and crapping, that is....

I have house-trained many dogs in my time and I have always managed to do it within two weeks max.

I have always used old newspaper by the back door (or wherever you want him/her to go out). Whenever the dog looked like he was going to do his business, I'd pick him up and carry him to the newspaper. Rewarded with treats, of course, and then he soon got the message that was where he needed to go. Then progress to getting him to let you know he wants to go outside by either sitting by the door or scratching the door.

My dogs were able to also come here, sit, lie down, stay, give their paws and roll over, go away, etc within two weeks. I also made sure they didn't just dive into their food and gorge it manically as soon as it was put down. They had to sit in their baskets and the bowl was put down, then they were told to go to their food.

They were splendid, well-behaved fellas.... the BEST!!

Hope this helps. Good luck!! cheers

The crate/kennel should not be a means of punishment - it should become his favourite place to stay in. You do so by following the great and detailed advice which you'll find by googling for "crate training". It goes hand in hand with housebreaking (what everyone else has said on this thread). Don't forget though, that a puppy can only stay in his crate for a limited amount of time - usually it's as many hours as he's old in months +1 (e.g. puppy is 2 months old, so 2 hours + 1 = can stay in the crate for not longer than approx. 3 hours).

In short, for crate training, the usual formula that works for me unfailingly is: 1) walk/run/play/train (to make the pup tired), 2) eat/snack/chew bone or chew toy & water, 3) the natural response then is wanting to rest, which is the perfect time to kennel him up. That way you know you've fulfilled your obligations and if he makes any fuss/objections to being crated, it's not because he "wants something", and you can safely correct any whining/pawing at the crate door (a spray bottle with plain water in it will help with that!).

The first beagle I had lived to be 18 years old, and I didn't have too much trouble with her until she was ill at the end.

The 2nd one is now 6 years old, and was a bit more defiant, than the 1st.

I work all day, and there was no question that she would have to be kenneled for the hours I was gone, because she had the habit of "going" when and where she felt like it !

She now (most of the time), comes and gets me, and I ask if she wants to go outside, and she runs for the door.

This took some patience and constant saying the words,"Go Outside?" and showing the action,(Opening the door for her).
I also say "Go Potty" until she does, before she is allowed to play.

However, she still has accidents if I am too busy to notice her asking me to go out.

She has been used to the kennel since she was 10 weeks old, so she doesn't think it is any sort of punishment.
She curls up on her blanket and sleeps most of the day.
She does not go potty in there, unless I am unusually late getting home.

She goes in there by herself even when I am home if I am busy, because she is so used to it.

I don't know if she will ever get over the accidents that she has occationally, but it keeps the house safe having her in the kennel during my away hours.

When I have a kitten or puppy....I teach them that a certain vocal sound means wrong and I always treat them or love on them for good. The rest is easy.

If the puppy has made a poop. I let them smell it and use the vocal sound (deep growly ANNNTTTTTT) then put him were I want him to go and pet him and tell him (gooood dog!) Catching him starting to go...say ANNNTTTTT and pick him up put him on the paper and let him go....then gooood dog. After getting the sound and treat or loving set......you can control most anything. If my dog is barking late at night.....I peck the window say (ANNNTTTTT) HE stops!
later all I need to do is peck on the window and he stops. Dogs and cats want to please you....they just need a way to know right from wrong.....teach him early......(ANNNTTTT and goooood dog with treat or loving.....even if you only can say gooood dog they still feel loved.

One of my dogs was about to go on a tarp I had laid in the yard to dry. She was half way...I said ANNNTTTT and she in the pooping position wobbled over off the tarp and I said goooood girl.....then she finished.
When she finished...I went over to pet her and brag on her.......she acted like she had saved the whole world....she acted so proud. Silly dog!!! I miss her much.....very much!crying

Dogs can tell the differnce betwine annnttt and gooood ( and the tone) . however words like bed and bad are the same to them.
A verbal comand with a treet will eventualy not require a treet and still get the same response.

I know this is no help but I was surprised by a cat that my roomate had. She had kittens and she trained them to use the litterbox and when they got older the cat door and basicly the house rules. I watched her training the kittens to use the catdoor, it was somthing amazing.

Your right words that are like other words cause confusion for them. The annnnt can be said lightly or gruff and never be confused with other words. the smae with a long goooood ...those are their words only. Glad you mentioned that. Treats are not always in your pocket so they must do it to please and know they are approved or loved.

It is funny! I can correct dogs with ANNNTTT that I have never been around. I quess with body actions and tone I get my message across.
LOL

Cats! They are just too smart sometimes and at other times dumb as a post. LOL

Cats , they know. They just play dumb because they think we are.

I used to be a pizza delivery driver and have found that all dogs respond to a gental/happy 'hi there puppy' even when you see teeth and no tail.
