Just a question I have been wondering about lately..

Wow ! Now there's a question that needs real attention.

Good one. I have to think about this one. There are so many levels to this question.

The question is actually so good it is hurting my head. I may have to revisit in the morning, when my brain has some semblance of function.

Let's start with this;
Impassive, stoic, phlegmatic, apathetic, stolid mean unresponsive to something that might normally excite interest or emotion. impassive stresses the absence of any external sign of emotion in action or facial expression <met the news with an impassive look>. stoic implies an apparent indifference to pleasure or especially to pain often as a matter of principle or self-discipline <was resolutely stoic even in adversity>. phlegmatic implies a temperament or constitution hard to arouse <a phlegmatic man unmoved by tears>. apathetic may imply a puzzling or deplorable indifference or inertness <charitable appeals met an apathetic response>. stolid implies an habitual absence of interest, responsiveness, or curiosity <stolid workers wedded to routine>.

Now, all that is between the lines.

I must say, this is one of the most thought inspiring threads that I have ever encountered, on the web or otherwise.

In my opinion it's not apathetic - tis respectful to yourself and others. Accepting the things you cannot change, changing the things you can - having the wisdom to know the difference. In end....we have no power over how anyone else acts or feels - we can only be responsible for ourselves.

"we can only be responsible for ourselves". And there lies the danger.

And the reward.

Live and let live is not at it's core about apathy. Not caring how another persons live or feels is not the same thing as accepting their feelings and choices, allowing them to make their own mistakes to learn from, and to have their own achievements to reap the rewards of.

And an oft overlooked part of this saying is the "live" portion. If we will live our own lives, take responsibility for our own choices, we won't have so much time to try and run other's lives. In the end, all will be happier that way.

This is partially true... It "appears" you have visited soem of the places I have..

when in the " you live and let ME live " ... the Me part becomes more important and the primary objective ...

I see the danger in taking on responsibility for other's actions - that's ego - saying I'm right, you're wrong - do it my way, it's better.

In some instances, some would be way better off if they followed the set of instructions before them..

Yes if they choose to follow those instructions. If not, we can't force others to do what we think is right for them. And truly, sometimes we just don't know. Maybe what they need to do is screw up royally, without anyone's help. Sometimes, it takes what it takes. But, I'm not telling you anything you don't know.

Is prettty much the attitude in my town.

People wave as they pass each other on the road, but otherwise everyone pretty much keeps to themselves.

They don't especially want to interact with their neighbors unless they are out of weed or beer.

What they care about is themselves.

Is that apathy or selfishness?
