I forget what passage it is in but the celibacy thing is based solely on the one passage where a saint said that is best to be celibate like him but if you cant manage it you should get married

I know the one you refer to .... it did commend individuals who took vows of celibacy, but men and womens natural condition is to be together as God intended... if one choses to sacrifice him/herself for God though it is highly commended.. fasting is also highly valued and can be a really effective aid to prayer..

This is what I was recalling

1 Corinthians 7:7-9

7I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.

8Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am. 9But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

I just did a quick topic search (on the website I mentioned before) it tossed up these

Matthew 19:10-12; 1 Corinthians 7:1; 1 Corinthians 7:2; 1 Corinthians 7:7-9; 1 Corinthians 7:25; 1 Corinthians 7:26; 1 Corinthians 7:32-40; 1 Corinthians 9:5 (New International Version)

The thing I do not like about the Catholic Church is that I remember not beening able to go in the church if you did not wear a hat. Now it does not matter.

The mass is now in English and there was a rock and roll mass to try and get the teens back to church.

My dad still goes but he says it has changed so much he does not feel the same way about it as before.

wave Hi.. beautiful photo btw..

For heaven's sake... sigh... The Catholic Church are trying to turn into a marketing machine with their hot shot team behind them I am sure.. but spiritually they are soo in the dark and so resistant to a change in spiritual direction...

Matthew, Mark and Luke are by all accounts similar summaries of Christ's life from his conception to his miracles teachings etc to his betrayal and crucifiction... so they all mention Mary in the conception part.. that is not denied.. she is also mentioned (not by name) in some of the earlier prophesied in the old testament.. she is identified by the fact of being a virgin and by her blood line, which is traced back to David (before incorrectly said Abraham)... that she bore Christ is not in dispute at all.. even the Quran acknowledges this and the ancient Hebrew text (I think).. just saying which is not in dispute in accordance with scripture at least... She is not to be worshipped or prayed to.. can't be clearer than that... that is the ONLY issue which I have based the op on.. but hey while I am at it I also have a problem with the Catholics 'passports for sale', incorrect obligation for celibacy, worship of saints, statues... etc.. My 'issues' are scriptural based.. As a Catholic I had no major issues with anything other than the fact that it was an empty religion.. went to a Catholic school the nuns were lovely, I have known some lovely priests and Catholic people in the main are good people.. the Church and its misguidance my only problem really... but clearly I have touched a nerve with you.. by all means.. go off to mass.. pray to mary and statues... and well knock yerself out.. I will continue to do my thing...
I think you have intentionally chose to ignore what was sais earlier. I have to be honest I really dont know what your problem is, I have noticed that you hide behind your knowledge or your interpetation of the gospels, in my opionion you are just trying to cause controversy for the sake of it, hey knock yourself out

Hmmmmm we are going to differ on this point , Depending on the duration and severity of the fast any extra “Aid to prayer” can be accounted for by the bodies natural reaction to fasting and it's affect on the brain

Thanks.. yeah that is pretty much it.. it is commended to chose God over union with another as Jesus did, but marriage is acknowledged as the natural condition.. sex is acknowledged as a natural urge.. yeah see he did have some understanding.. we all know what its like to be burning with passion.. not easy laugh

I have had an experience following fasting recently.. I had hit a couple of brick walls in my life and needed 'special' intervention..

I am self employed.. which is tough cause the cheques can be slow to come in.. I had to cancel my bank card cause it was stolen so I was down to my last €10.. also I had received a 'I am sorry but you will be not included in our list of candidates letter.' for a job.. so no money.. no bank card.. rejection letter.. can't get any worse really laugh..

On the wednesday I fasted, prayed and read the bible all day.. on the wednesday.. I got a call from the employer saying they had reconsidered my application.... I was called to do the entrance exam.. laugh complete turn around.. then I got this urge to go into town.. at first I ignored the urge (cause I was feelin really lazy.. was on CS actually at the time laugh) and got the subconscious 'word' again..so said a quick prayer asking God if it is him telling me.. let me get a text from a particular person before 1pm.. at that very moment I got the text.. from that person.. so I went in........ to find 2 cheques.. totalling 3.5k.... bit of a breakthrough.. laugh

If I was going to fast for the mental reaction (I am not suggesting you do) I would aim for a minimum of 3 days hopping for 4-7 days I used to fast every now and then just to test my will power I think I made it to 2 weeks once after the third day most of the hunger go away (this is the point where the body is seriously feeding off it’s self) when I say fast it was water only or coffee black with no sugar or sweetener

Yet statues of every and any one they choose to call Saints are everywhereIt also states "there is one mediator between God and man, that person is Jesus Christ"....yet they had designated Mary as their mediator.

to the poster that made reference to the Romans whoring Christianity(my words) to apease the masses....this is why Mary is held in such high regard. The pagan religion of Rome had female dieties...Mariology was estrablished to appease them. While visiting Rome, I pissed off the tour guide when I made the comment that"...I have seen the Church of St John of Laterno...I have seen the church of St Mary Major...I have seen, even, The Church of the Holy Staircase ( a most holy shrine), Basillica of St Peter, St Paul Cathedral............But don't you think it would be nice if there was a church to Jesus Christ somewhere in Rome"

Always the smartass!!
rolling on the floor laughing i would have liked to have been thier to see the expression of the tour guide....hey shipoker, do you have a boat there in the tampa bay area?....my brother used to have a 42' famosa ketch in bradington...eggmont key is a cool place to anchor out....

You are well read, Aries, I'm impressed.

Which leaves just one other question - why does this subject bother you so much ?. I mean, fervent evangelical catholics are few on the ground these days in Ireland anyway - and those pushing a Holy Mary Mother of God agenda are even fewer. innocent

I just don't like that people are being lied to, to their spiritual detriment.. what can I say I am passionate about the truth... now while I know that most people don't care that much anyway.. I figure at least if they have a clean slate that has its basis in truth, they are at a good place, whether they chose to seek it out further or not... guess I have always been like that.. why I became a lawyer etc.... even when I was younger and found out that there was no Santa.. I felt a big compulsion to tell all the kids the truth.. laugh... that got me into trouble I can tell you.. and mortified my mother.. laugh..

Anyway, clearly I have touched a nerve.. so for that I apologise..

Yeah that also one of the reasons why Martin Luther got pissed of with the church.

Also I do agree that the Church has been corrupt in the past and it may still be. Pope John Paul knew about this and was murdered for trying to clean up the church. Also the Roberto Calvi Murder was also part of this.

Anyway.. Mark 10 'from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female, for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh, so that they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together let not man seperate'... plus most of the early apostles were married... marriage is one of the most important and sacred unions in the Bible because it is so important to the family, which in turn is so important to society as a whole... some chose celibacy... but it was certainly not a requirement..
Calvin got kicked out of Geneva too,for a good while, and preached in Strasbourg.
Calvinism is NOT a form of Protestantism you'll want to practice,if you WANT to practice a Religion.
