One could argue how free can a person be when the government confiscates 50% of one's income?

you can be free in your mind.....if you try

money is only a commodity and cannot be taken with you when you leave your immortal coil.....

One could deduce that in the long run, it could be for us...but that's a debatable topic, for sure.

Money is representative of one's efforts in life. It also gives people options in life to do things in life. I may want to build a castle or possibly give it all away; hence freedom. JMO

Sorry I'm kinda off topic here but someone else mentioned being free.

Here is a list, in no particular order, of things that make me question our freedom.

Property taxes- We supposedly own our homes and cars but try skipping out on paying your taxes and see how long they are in your possession.

Seatbelt Laws- The makers of the law care so much about our well being, that they will fine us to make it crystal clear. Meanwhile, school children are still being bumped around on a school bus as if the padded seat in front of them will keep them from bouncing of f the roof of the bus should it flip.

Smoking ban- When I go to play poker in a bar, I won't have to worry about whether or not a smoker is being rude by blowing smoke in my face. Why? Because there will be a new law that will take away the owner's right to make a decision about the smoking policy in his/her own bar.

Bar Talk- Oh yeah, and if someone at my poker table says a few curse words, I may be able to just call the cops and have them hauled away. It may be possible due to a proposed law to ban cursing.

Cigarette Tax- “Raubin and Megan’s “On the Other hand,” covered this topic heavily. State employees are buying too much junk food. Therefore, smokers are going to pay higher taxes on their cigs to help the state employees make healthier choices.

Remember, almost every time they make a new law, we are losing another one of our precious rights. At the end of the day, it is important to stay aware and stay vocal.

I respect your opinion and would add that one might be satisfied with food for one's belly and and a soft place to rest ones head after a honest days toil to merely keep one alive....

how much does one need to fulfill one....

simple or complex which of the two is more satisfying at the end of the day..

"Innocent children" that are forced to fight against other "Innocent children"

Forced??? US military is "VOLUNTEER".. They are not forced to do anything. When they enlist (just like me in 59) they pretty much know what to expect..wink

I do not know about other countries, what I do know is I was "ALLOWED"
to participate in my freedom....grin

That somewhat misses the point. I think the human spirit should be free to aspire to the levels of greatness* one desires. That, to me...is freedom.

*greatness determined by the individual...not by the government.

(and I respect your opinion also)

Are we really free? If so from what?

I know we enjoy more liberities then other countries. I guess that maybe be the accepted definition of liberity.

Are we completely free? I say NO, then we'd have anarachy.

If someone is surrounded by laws & confined & contricted in your movement are you really free?

I do not know if you are free or not my dear but HJF stands for Happy, Joyous & FREE............wink

Yes we have alot of rules here, many quetionable. But at least we can openly rant about it. We can openly call our president or prime minister an a$$hole, or call for his impeachment. We might make some enemies,or lose respect saying it, but at the end of the day we can go home and sleep in our own bed. There are a lot of places in this world, you complain about the goverment, you get arrested and shot before dawn. Sometimes they just shoot, instead of wasting time arresting people.

these are pretty much examples of mob rule...our founding fathers knew all too well what mob rule was and that it was not true freedom...and they also knew what government was capable of...they wrote out a big ole set of ''giude lines'' that would protect the ones who didnt fall into the majority...to protect us from mob rule...our new government is slowly chipping away at those ''giude lines'' to support mob rule...and mob rule is by no means freedom...we were supposed to be a republic... {less government}...but, with the help of mob rule we have become a dimocracy...{more government}...our government loves to use the word democracy today, as if thats the only way....you will also notice another word that is misused alot...and that is the word patriot...everytime you hear it...its talking about someone who thinks there supposed to follow whatever the government says....but, the true meaning of a patriot is this.....one who is ready and willing to protect his country....{now get this}...from its own government....our right to bare arms ,for an example of another blinder, has nothing at all to do with my right to go deer hunting or to protect my home....our right, in that regard, was to have equal power as the government.....the ''patriot act'' took away our right to have a malitia......freedom and mob rule?.....as they say, ''the mass' are ass' ''professor

We wish to thank you for your confidence and support, Gentlepaws. 'A war that cannot be won'.....'millions of American dieing'.......'spending money' on such things as body armor and vehicle armor to save soldier lives.....spending it providing food to starving Afghani......wish a story of the kind of men we face, Gentlepaws?

I will give you one.

Early in the Afghanistan war.....the Northern Alliance had some of the small towns surrounded by the Taliban. They could not supply them with food. Women, children and elderly lived in the towns. The Northern Alliance fighters. They ask the US....now in the fight...to fly air drops over the towns and drop MREs into them. We agreed.

Only you cannot hit a small village at night with such a air drop.....and a lot would fall outside of the town. They would send the women and children outside the walls to collect them in the morning. Well the Taliban....seeing this. Soon began to place land mines under the MREs packets.....so when the women and children picked them up.....they would see them disappear in a explosion in the town from the walls.

Get the idea gentlepaws?

Now Gentlepaws.....wish not to help these people? Wish them back into those small towns with the Taliban breathing down thier neck
and ready to make entry? Bring your Canadian forces home and make them safe. Stop the funding for them. Refuse to provide the equipment and materials they need. When you.....think of the Afghani kid.....you just sold out...and placed into a life of servitude to the
Taliban.
