I live just a couple of miles from where the Sophie Lancaster tragedy happened and have given this issue renewed thought in the last few months.

This fear of people who are different has always gone on and to my mind dispalys an arrogant want for analytical thinking of the part of those who behave this way.

I can still hear my Dad telling me how awful all those hippies were but he hadnt ever known one of course and was just reitterating stuff he had read in the papers etc and which reinforce whichever brand of xenophobia is currently making the rounds.

Teddy Boys, Hippies, Punks or whatever - people fear what they dont understand, I dont think they even question 'why' certain individuals make a stand to be different, they just react in fear to 'anything' which is different and very sadly in Sophies case, mob behaviour took over.

I find it unbelievable that in 2008, these things arent being addressed by the education system - fear of differences is counterproductive to an inclusive society.

I wont be able to get to the march but thanks again for bringing it to our attention.

Lets not allow Sophies death to have been in vain...............

Sorry I can't make the march, as I have no way of making down there,

But my thoughts are with you, I live nearby of where Sophie was killed, one of my daughters was deeply affected about what had happend as she knew her, and of the lads that killed her !!!!! (It started off as a bit of fun, 1 of the accused said) he was showing off in front of his mates!

I saw the tribute to her in Whitby in April of this year, and still brings tears to my eyes when I remember her mum sitting on a bench saying "why because she was dressed different" she died saving her boyfriend.

It's a sorry state of affairs when you are targeted for abuse because "You look different" they teach PC in schools of different cultures and different ethnics, why not that it is alright to be different without the label of what you are
