Hi everyone. I don't post too much, but read them everyday and now I need some advice from the "been there, done that" club. My B-day is in a few days and I have decided that I want to change a lot of stuff in my life. This past year has been a little tougher than most all of the years before and I have taken some big steps to "start over", ie: going back to school, getting away from less than positive people, getting over the ex.. blah, blah, blah. Anyway, now I'd like to do something for me.

Anyone make a major change in their physical apearance ie: I have blonde hair down to my waist, was gonna color it brunette and cut it short and did you "feel" like a new person after or did you regret it? I know it sounds superficial, it actually is, but I think it's my turn to be nice to me, I'm just a little scared to do it...

It all depends on what you want and feel and think really.

At least once a year I try to treat myself. I like to get a makeover. I usualy get my hair colored and cut. I also go out and buy myself a nice outfit to go along with it.

Maybe you can treat yourself to a day or weekend spa? Get your hair done and nails done and all that jazz at the same time? Wouldn't hurt. Can't say it will change your inner self but it will definatly make you feel good about yourself and give you more pump for life.

I say go for it. You deserve it yay

In February my daughter treated me to a $37.00 hair cut....I was so afraid.....because like you I always had long hair.....I have learned to love it and I want to keep it this way.....I noticed that it seemed to me.....maybe just my imagination....but people seemed to treat me with more respect in public places.....males and females....you know it shouldn't make a difference.....but in our society it does.....I need to have it done again....I am looking for someone I can trust...for a cut like I got in the Mall of Georgia in Atlanta....might have to go back just for a hair cut....cool

I think when you make a change that huge it will have an effect on how you perceive yourself. Whether that will ultimately turn out to be a positive or negative thing is only something that time can reveal.

Personally I prefer natural color hair and I also love long hair so I'm not excited about your proposed change. But that's me and I'm not you.

I did a huge favor for a friend in need and as a thank you he gave me a gift certificate for 10 free tanning sessions. I ignored all the advice about how bad it is for you (hell I smoke - what could be worse than that) and used the gift certificate. Got my hair cut shorter and highlighted to cover some of the gray. I felt like a major babe! I recommend it strongly. And the extra attention I got from others I don't think came from the change but the bounce in my step because I felt good about me.

I never changed my appearance but got back into being sporty...after 14 yrs it's funny how things just come back to you.

On the other hand my x got a tat. For her it signified change, a new chapter in her life. Change is good.

Thanks everyone for the help! I'll probably just color it for now - I'm too worried about cutting it all off. Also, the tanning idea sounds really great - might give it a try. Summer's here, time for a change. I'll let you all know how brave I was in a few days. Take care and thanks again!

mom - I went through the same thing. Lost down to 95 lbs, cut my long hair really short. Just wanted to be wanted by someone.

Think sometimes we handle the rejection thing by thinking if we improve our appearances, that we will be wanted.

Starting over..., thanks God for that! There are people who cannot do or said the same. I have talked to old, old people, who have regrets for what they did not do, because they were afraid, sometimes for some of them, sadly, starting over is out of the question.
So, don't be afraid and do what makes you happy, want to color, cut you hair, go ahead and do it, what is the worse it can happen? you don't like it? you can start over, let it grow!
Going to school is a great idea! I am doing the same, now that my kids are older and don't need me that much, I decided that I want to do something I really love.
The most important thing here is that you be happy and comfortable, think about it, no one knows yourself more that you, no one can make you happy but you and if you cannot make yourself happy, the chances somebody else can do it for you, are very slim.

Take care and make yourself happy!

Yami.

I had hair down past my butt for years, and when I got it cut off, I sure did feel like a new person.

Go for it, and be prepared for a shock! D'oh! dropping jaw

It's a huge change, but you get used to it, and you can always grow it out again (I did/am.)

NOOO don't do that, BAD-BAD-BAD!!! Use a temporary tanning cream...!!!

My dermatologist said he's been in the field for 30 years, and there are some on the market now that are so good they fool him!

I had a precancerous lesion removed from my back 2 years ago, and I had friends when I was younger who already got skin cancer. We grew up in New Mexico in the 60s and 70s, the years of "who knew from sunscreen?" - sunbathe all summer, use baby lotion or tanning oil and get as dark as you can. We and our parents didn't know any better, but now we're paying for it!

Please don't take unnecessary risks, it's not worth it!

You are so correct! Thank you for your warning! I hope others read this post as well and your experience is enough of a lesson learned for all of us!

By the way - yes, I'm going to cut it (my hair obviously!) - but have decided to make the change easier for me to accept, I'll donate the cut hair to "locks of love". I was wondering if anyone knows of anyway to find out how to go about doing that? I figure I can help someone else out that way. It'll be a win-win. (I'll have to change my profile picture though). So, unless I start a thread in the next few days saying... WHY did I do that?!?!, you can assume I am not mortified by the change too much! lol

Thank you Assets, the link was great.

OK - I DID IT!!! I colored my hair. Was going from blonde (naturally) to brunette. Thought it was going to be a great idea. I thought wrong. The lesson learned today is if you go from blonde and want to go darker, it comes out red. Not like Grace from Will and Grace, a pretty red either - it comes out like Elmo from Sesame Street red!!!!!! UGHHH! What now?? lol

There are all kinds of ways to "ease" yourself into being a "new you" if jumping in is too overwhelming...If you want to change your hair colour try a semi-permanent dye...they usually last about 28 washes that way if you really hate it...it will eventually wash out...i agree with the tanning cream, as well if you don't think you can prepare yourself for the shock of long to short hair...go mid length..a kind of a compromise of sorts...
One of the things i did when i turned 35 was get a professional manicure/pedicure...something i had not done in ages because my kids were young and i had diapers to change and baths to do...I also changed my eating habits...and it was one of the best gifts i could have given myself!!
Good Luckapplause

LMAO! Yeah, I bet it would change my life, but I think I need to pass on that one. Hell, I'm just psyched to go out for a couple of beers with my cousins this weekend - first time to go out to a place that doesn't stamp your hand with a cartoon mouse in.. well, too long! Don't know what I'll do about my Elmo hair-do, but I figure after a couple of beers, I won't care anyway! Hope everyone has a great weekend (and moms have a happy Mother's Day.
Take care!
